SCOPE DANCE FORUM brings together the local dance community and industry voices for its first edition: Hip-Hop - a unique experience filled with workshops, conversation and celebration. The event features two special 90-minute collaboration workshops led by four hip-hop dance teachers. This format offers a rare opportunity to experience different styles, approaches and perspectives within one session. In addition to the workshops, we’ll host an open panel discussion with experienced dancers and cultural professionals, diving into the current state of hip-hop culture, trends and future directions. Everyone will have the chance to ask questions and join the conversation. This story walks through a personal journey of growth, strength and realignment. Rooting deep into what one is aligned for and blossoming into who one really thrives to be. This piece is inspired by the different seasons and the visual changes of trees during each of them. As we move and grow like seasons - spring with the naked branches, barely surviving the long winter rolling past and at the most vulnerable state being certain that summer is bringing back the familiar green bright lively leaves - we thrive to be the naked tree leaning into the faith of becoming its full potential again. The potential that stems from strong, raw, tangled and evergrowing roots. May we all have the courage and faith to plant a seed within and ride along the journey of rooting ourselves into bloom. Gamble is a dance project exploring aspects of uncertainty and chance through movement, sound and composition. Do things happen randomly out of coincidence or are they destined to happen? How do we deal with uncertainty and what feelings or responses does it provoke? The movement material in Gamble is based on but not limited to the performers’ respective dance styles: popping and breaking. Working with different dynamics, movement qualities and the sense of gravity, the performers aim to embody a range of emotions that uncertainty may bring ranging from excitement and playfulness to fear and anxiety. Traditional six-sided dice symbolises the element of chance in Gamble. The word die/dice originates from the Latin word datum, which means “what is given or played”. The performers use the dice to randomise movement and play games on stage. Hence, each performance is unique and in part unfolds as given by chance. Wounding the World is a solo dance work researching phallocentrism through the lens of a genderqueer conscientious objector – how our patriarchal world is obsessed in reigning through placing violence on the bodies. The solo begins with the body struggling in the aftermath of a battle. A lament for gender-neutral bodies is uttered, escalating into a totalitarian choreography that forces the dancer in a self-sabotaging phrase. This violence is tackled via abstracting the carnal shape of the body. These new shapes work as silhouettes, trying to break free from the binary bounds, being some secret third thing from the man/woman dichotomy. The solo ends in a fever-dreamy monologue – the body is in the battlefield not able to wield weapons, not wanting to kill. The body is then further stripped from its contaminations and we’re left with the initial totalitarian phrase. Something has changed. Cinderella, where is your shoe? is a dance performance about identity, pressure and rediscovering yourself. Inspired by the idea that everyone carries their own Cinderella within the piece begins in the world of contemporary dance before shifting into a transformed reality. Guided by a “Fairy Godmother” Cinderella enters the dance ball — stepping into heels and the expectations of the commercial dance scene. As the styles collide the work explores the stigma and tension dancers face when trying to fit into different worlds. In the end, Cinderella breaks free from expectations reclaiming her own voice. The performance closes with a bold, concert-style finale that celebrates authenticity, confidence and the freedom to be both.
