When it comes to #inclusiveengineering, what do you think? Disagree with these responses to our survey? Have more to add?
Together with the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering, we're trying to understand more about inclusive practices and downstream outcomes in engineering.
Please tell us about an inclusive/non-inclusive project or outcome you know of, or respond to our survey: /inclusive-engineering/
Together with the Royal Academy of Engineering, we're spearheading a project to understand more about inclusive practices and outcomes in engineering.
We’re now launching our survey and request for case studies. This is a chance for engineers, researchers, and those working in related roles all around the world to share their experiences, thoughts and opinions on how we can build a world in which engineering works for everyone.

The neuroscience exhibition, HELLO BRAIN!, curated by our Head Creative, Holly Cave, opened to the public on Saturday.
It's free to visit and just by King's Cross St Pancras (open Wed-Sat 10-4), so don't miss it if you're in London!
The exhibition welcomed over 500 people on Saturday - the highest number of visitors on an exhibition opening day at @thefranciscrickinstitute 🧠

We're proud to say that we've just completed our first annual @1percentftp certification, donating 1% of our turnover to two environmental partners, @solaraid and @farmurban.co.uk 🌞 🌿
Imagine what could be achieved if every company did the same 💚
Our donation to Farm Urban will provide 100 'Greens for Good' boxes to local food-insecure community members, nourishing them with fresh, locally produced superfood, grown, harvested, packaged and distributed in a way that's good for people and the planet 🌍
Our donation to Solar Aid will help provide life-changing solar lights for
people in sub-Saharan Africa. For example, it will help young people like Agnesi in Zambia, who lives with her sister and grandmother in the rural village of Nyakantingi. The village lacks electricity, which means that it gets pitch black when the sun sets at 6pm. Recently, the village school got a Light Library where the students can borrow a solar light with them home after school to be able to study in the evenings 💡

How do you feel about remote working? 🏢 🏘
This month, Ars Technica ran a piece about creativity in science, and how remote collaboration might be making research more derivative.

Co-coveners Tori Blakeman and Edwin Colyer launched the first SciCommUnity networking event this morning! 🚀
True to form, Manchester's renowned weather meant drizzle, and lots of it. However, it did not detour the crowd.
With attendees out in force, the first SciCommUnity breakfast networking event brought together Comms and PR specialists, Academics, Researchers, Journalists, Students and more...
The next SciCommUnity event will be held on the 14th of November!
Are you a science communicator, expert or curious about science, innovation and impact with a need to network?

Allerdale ruled out as Geological Disposal Facility site for nuclear waste
@bbcnews
Last week, the proposed nuclear waste site in Allerdale was scrapped. The decision was made after the assessment of the surrounding geology determined that the rock at the site was unfit for use and could possibly have public health implications if used to store radioactive waste.
As a company placing #impact and #community first, it is especially pleasing to see that the decision was made between authorities and the affected community, perhaps indicating a shift in approach from authorities.
Edwin Colyer offers his assessment of the decision by saying:
"This little news gem goes much deeper than it looks on the surface. The UK has a growing stockpile of high-level radioactive waste – including 140 tonnes of plutonium from the nuclear power sector. There is international consensus that an underground geological disposal facility (GDF) will be the safest way to store this waste long-term.
The UK is working to determine where a GDF could be sited. Four communities, including Allerdale, agreed to exploratory surveys to identify possible locations for a future repository. Logistically, Allerdale would have been a great shout, as it’s just a stone’s throw from Sellafield’s cooling ponds. However, it does not have suitable geology to pass the safety case.
Here’s what I really love about this initial phase of the GDF programme: it puts local communities and citizens at its heart. Proving safe and stable geology is just the first small step because construction of the GDF will not proceed without local community consent. I believe that all science and engineering, but especially huge, transformative infrastructure projects like this one, are so much richer, more ethical, and more impactful when citizens and communities are deeply involved in design, delivery, decision-making, and scrutiny.
Allerdale is excluded from the GDF site search for technical reasons. It will be interesting to see how this more collaborative approach to a multi-generational project pans out for the three communities still in the running".

As a company on a journey to becoming a B-corp, it’s incredibly important to us that we can walk the walk before any formal certification.
While it is a part of our planning, we are laying the groundwork to make sure we represent this status properly and our values reflect purpose and sustainable business practices.

As science communicators, Jodrell Bank seemed a rather fitting location to have our first ever company family social!
Through intermittent rain, some legendary homemade hummus and chocolate cake were consumed, education at the centre inspired our next generation in science (we hope), and we chilled with some classic games and coffee..
Thank you to everyone who came, it was really beautiful.
P.S... Did you know you could fit 168 double-decker buses into the Lovell Radio Telescope? 🤔
