Repost Initiated in 1982 by UNESCO, International Dance Day is marked around the world on April 29, the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, regarded as the founder of modern ballet. At Woodland Cultural Centre, we understand dance as a living practice within Hodinohsho:ni culture, connected to healing, storytelling, spirituality, and the ongoing relationship between people, land, and memory. This lives within Continuance – Immersive Commemoration, co-presented with Kaha:wi Dance Theatre. Bringing together movement, music, language, and projection, the work reflects on the history of the former Mohawk Institute while celebrating Indigenous cultural continuance. Here's a reflection from last year's 2025 creation residency at Woodland Cultural Centre. We are 1 month away from opening night! Clip features: @kahawidance dance artists; song in Kanien’kéha by Semiah; projection design by Shane Powless, Emma Lopez, AVA Animation; concept/direction Santee Smith. #InternationalDanceDay #Continuance #KahawiDanceTheatre #WoodlandCulturalCentre #IndigenousDance #IndigenousArts #CulturalContinuance #SixNations #BrantfordEvents

We were honoured to be invited and greatful to the @ywcahamilton for hosting a beautiful night with Women of Distinction Recipients at the @thehamiltonclub1873 . CEO, Medora Uppal shared that this was the first time bringing this gathering to life, and we truly hope it continues as an annual tradition. 💜 It was also a memorable moment having Ryan Findlay @findlayr00 there as a sponsor and the only man in the room, he handled being outnumbered with ease and a good sense of humour. 💜 A special congratulations to the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, @marisamariella whose decades of leadership have made a lasting impact across our community. From advancing mental health awareness and suicide prevention initiatives, to building student-led programs like iMATTER and Run 4 Their Lives, to supporting newcomers through Arms Wide Open, Marisa has consistently created spaces of hope, healing, and connection. Her work reflects a deep commitment to ensuring people feel seen, supported, and empowered—true leadership in every sense. 💎 Did you know @hillbergandberk donated some stunning pendant necklaces as gifts to all recipients! 💜 It was also an honour to celebrate such inspiring leaders, including: @santeesmith , Kahnyen’kehà:ka artist from Six Nations of the Grand River, McMaster’s first Indigenous Chancellor and 2023 Order of Canada appointee; Kim Ritchie, McMaster social work graduate, community outreach volunteer supporting Hamilton encampment residents, and co-founder of the National Overdose Response Service; Dr. Karen Hill (Karenna’onwe), Mohawk physician from Six Nations and assistant professor at McMaster University; and Dr. Sheryl Green, clinical and health psychologist at St. Joseph’s Women’s Health Concerns Clinic, author, and assistant professor supporting women and people assigned female at birth across their reproductive journey. 💜 honouring women who rise💜

From our co-presenter ✨• @woodlandculturalcentre Tekaronhiáhkhwa / Santee Smith is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist and cultural leader from the Kahnyen’kehàka Nation, Ohswé:ken / Six Nations of the Grand River. As Founding Artistic Director of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre, she guides the creation of original performance works that weave ancestral knowledge, creativity, and contemporary performance. Trained at Canada’s National Ballet School, Santee holds degrees from McMaster University and an M.A. in Dance from York University. She served as the 19th Chancellor of McMaster University, is a member of the Order of Canada, and a Board Governor of The Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity. Rooted in over a decade of artistic engagement at the Mohawk Institute, Continuance – Immersive Commemoration builds on earlier works including The Mush Hole Project (2016) and the award-winning stage production The Mush Hole (2018). This immersive performance honours Survivors and celebrates Indigenous strength, continuity, and renewal. “The gift to respond creatively to the site of the Mohawk Institute, a school that my ancestors attended, is a moving acknowledgement to the spirit and ancestral legacy of our community. Transforming the colonial façade and everything it represents into beauty, power and restoration is spiritual nourishment. I am grateful for all the collaborators who have invested their blood, sweat and tears into creating a transformative experience which will leave lasting impacts on this site.” — Santee Smith / Tekaronhiáhkhwa Join us May 29 & 30 to witness this extraordinary, site-specific performance. For tickets or more information, comment ‘CELEBRATION’ and our team will send you the link! 😊 @kahawidance #CulturalContinuance #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousDance #CanadianTheatre #LivePerformance IndigenousCreativity HonourSurvivors LandBasedArt
