🌱Common Threads By @av_misc in collaboration with @lyndalorraine Hosted at @damsel.collective In August, we took part in an insightful panel series, Common Threads: Bridging Cultures through Creative Practice. This community-focused event brought together creatives from diverse backgrounds, allowing panellists and attendees to explore how culture and identity shape and influence creative practice. The conversations were thoughtful and inspiring, highlighting the power of creativity to foster connection and cultural understanding. Shifting (2025) by mmii (@mmii.work ) is an immersive two-part experience exploring climate change, human impact, and our coexistence with nature. Created by digital artist duo Sami Malla (@sam.i.did ) and Junghyun Kim (@i_am_jung_hyun ) as part of MA Digital Direction (RCA, Graduated 2024), in collaboration with Hoo Kim (MA Design Product, Graduated 2024) for Part 1. Part 1 presents a sensor-driven wooden panel installation arranged like tree rings. Once touched, a digital olive tree comes alive, symbolising how human touch connects to ecological fragility. Part 2 guides participants through a virtual environment shaped by ultrasonic plant sounds, where they explore abstract olive tree sculptures, uncover hidden elements, and move beyond set paths. Together, both parts invite reflection on the ecological shift of olive trees (Olea europaea), a species historically tied to humanity but increasingly unable to survive in traditional regions due to climate change — a metaphor for the broader transformation of our relationship with nature. This was made using TouchDesigner, Arduino, Unreal Engine, Blender, and Max 9. “Shifting (2025) – Part 2” was presented through video projection at Common Threads (Aug 2025), a panel series highlighting emerging London-based creatives reflecting on culture, identity, and creative practice — founded by @av_misc in collaboration with @lyndalorraine #rca #digitaldirection #productdesign #mmii #immersiveinstallation #digitalart #unrealengine #touchdesigner #arduinoart #climatechangeart #interactiveinstallation #newmediaart #blender #max9

Co:beliefs (2024) Sami Malla @sam.i.did and Junghyun Kim @i_am_zoey_kim Commonality of Beliefs [Co:beliefs], is a VR experience and a 360 film that delves into the intriguing world of superstitions through immersive real-world experiences; exploring their role in fostering cultural cohesion; and examining the persistence and relevance of superstitious thinking in modern society. Our journey began with a simple question: “Why do people still believe in superstitions?” This question piqued our curiosity and led us to delve into the narratives of superstitious thinking that exist today. This digital immersion offers a fresh perspective on how superstitions are formed; expounding on the emotions people harbour in the digital realm, especially those related to uncertain futures. We utilised various opportunities that the XR + Game Development team offered, for example the performance was recorded using the Motion Capture facilities in both Battersea and White City lab. We were able to capture detailed movements and seamlessly incorporate them into our environments. The clothes, armature, and animation were combined and configured using Blender then imported into UE5, through this process we received ample amounts of support from Rian and Conner. There are online resources and QR codes to guide students in using the program or equipment so it was easy to get started. It was important to us that we created an immersive experience with meaningful interactions for each realm, therefore we used Unreal Engine 5. As both of us were new to VR and beginners at UE5, there were a lot of worries. However, with the support we received from all the technicians, especially Rian @rian.stephens , we were able to build a VR experience and 360 film that we were proud of. The VR experience is still in process but has been adapted into cinematics for the Digital Direction Outernet show on 24th - 28th July.
