A first look at my recent, final capsule collection for uni. Titled Honra. The military industrial complex is a contradiction. It lures young people in with the promise of honour and glory by serving your country, and yet the capitalist machine turns well meaning individuals into cogs in their system. The corporations and governments at the top that profit off of war and human suffering turn noble efforts into shameful atrocities. Using an Australian colonial-era convict jacket as an artefact to inform my capsule collection, I explored the idea of associating shame with government issued garments, and applied it to a modern day context. Each piece in the collection takes elements and features of military garments, with androgynous, rigid silhouettes. Distressing and raw edges throughout subvert the expectation of clean, neat military uniforms, with connotations of shame and disrespect. The collection features 100% cotton fabrics, with upcycled denim and military webbing from the Vietnam War being an exception. All pieces in the collection were naturally garment dyed using pomegranate, eucalyptus, madder root, & cutch (acacia catechu) with the intention of creating uneven, textured colours to convey an aged and “worn-in” look. Liquid8, the joint alias of Cataphonic’s cofounders @saliv88ing and @jjuudescott , are looking forward to heating up the floor ahead of @discostouf . With a focus on various styles of techno, they’ll be taking it slow; expect deep, squelchy, maybe bouncy, maybe silly, who knows. This week we have a talented techno artist on the mix, introducing @saliv88ing 🍃🌀 saliv8 is a Lisbon born, Gadigal based, DJ & producer. saliv8’s mixes are a masterfully crafted journey, filled with driving and hypnotic selects that cross between techno, groove and trance. One part of the Eora based @cataphonic_ crew, saliv8 also shares a deep passion for the community music scene, helping to platform local artists at events and through their iconic mix series.  For Exit Loop saliv8 has created a mix that uses only techno (and techno adjacent) music produced by Portuguese artists. This is an incredible deep dive into Portuguese techno music where you’re sure to discover something new, I know I sure did! Hopefully this inspires us all to keep looking for new sounds from new and unexpected places. saliv8 has also treated us to a few of his own unreleased tracks, being a Portuguese techno artist himself, so make sure you tune in for a first preview of those! Now more than ever I feel as though I should share my capsule collection from my previous semester at uni; as Israel continues its genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestine. __ Arabic intifāḍa ‘an uprising’ (literally ‘a jumping up as a reaction to something’), from intifaḍa ‘be shaken, shake oneself’. Palestinians in Gaza have been facing genocide for close to two years. This capsule is an exploration of tradition, reimagined within the frame of contemporary tailoring; a stand in solidarity with Palestine, as well as cultural preservation and appreciation. Elongated silhouettes. Fabric covering the entire body, draping over itself. Loose clothing increases airflow keeping the wearer cool in hot and arid areas. These elements are all prevalent in traditional menswear from the Levant and Maghreb regions, which have dictated the direction in which I have designed. I aimed to layer; fabrics sitting atop each other in ways seldom seen within Western tailoring, with a clear inspiration from traditional Islamic garments in each look. The textile direction of the capsule is informed by the landscapes of these regions. Dry. Rocky. With nods to traditional Palestinian textiles. Every fabric used within the collection was naturally dyed using gum and eucalyptus leaves, pomegranate, madder, and lac extract on all-natural fibres. Natural dye based print pastes were also used for all the prints within the capsule. Episode 223 is out now featuring saliv8. saliv8 is a Lisbon-born, Eora/Guringai (Sydney) based artist and co-founder of @cataphonic_ , a Guringai based event and mix series. With a focus on various styles of techno, he often delves into the broader spectrum of dance music to freshen up the sound; anything from psytrance to jersey club. "In this mix I wanted to blend hypnotic, yet driving, techno with psytrance in a way that made sense. I focussed on techno tracks with deep and textural soundscapes and psychedelically tinged sound design to work into some more techno infused psytrance. finally decided to release some music! I made Trench quite a while ago but it was the first track I’d made that I was truly content with, even though I was never going to release it. Well I changed my mind and finished the track. It’s not perfect but I thought I’d just get something out there while I work on more current projects. bit late but time to post some of my favourite work I did from last year. instagram gives me headnoise sometimes so just getting round to it // this t-shirt is the culmination of extensive natural dyeing and screen print experimentation. hand sewn 100% cotton jersey dyed using gum leaves and pomegranate (shells), featuring a placement screen print // the dyeing process involved using a range of natural dyes, including indigo, gum leaves, madder, etc. alongside different resist techniques. the collection of samples (some shown) were inspired by textures and scenes i observed in the bush // screen print experimentation lead me to create a repeat print inspired by urban decay and graffiti as an indication of decay, but who’s to say graffiti isn’t a completely valid form of art. it is essentially an exploration of these opposing ideas. i also used the screen in combination with stencilling to create multi-coloured placement prints, eg. the tee
