Could not have asked for a better ending to the @annecyfestival . 'How Did South African Apartheid Happen, and How Did It Finally End', a beautiful @tededucation film produced by @giraffics.studio won the Jury Award!
We are greatly honored to have been the sound and music team for this film. To tell this important story, we had the invaluable contribution of @luyololengamusic who brought the South African ethos to this film with his musicianship. The score uses instruments native to South Africa such as the Umrhube, Uhadi, Isitolotolo, and vocals in the Xhosa language, all performed by Luyolo Lenga.
Thank you to the director @ayamarzouk and the entire Giraffics team for this invaluable collaboration. Also, huge thanks to the TED-Ed team that continues to trust us with so many of their projects, and gives us the continued support and creative freedom to execute our sonic vision.
Congratulations to everyone involved!

Working on the Congolese story of Mwindo was a rich experience in big part because of the powerful vocals brought in by Fatuma (@verified_datuu ) and Benedict.
Here's a snippet showcasing just how powerful the raw vocals sound, followed by a comparison with the fully orchestrated score with multiple vocal and instrumental layers.
This scene is about our protagonist Mwindo's birth, and the celebration surrounding it. You might enjoy this better on your headphones 🎧

Recently, I had the ultimate great fortune of visiting my dream place. Pixar films have been a big part of my life, and an inspiration in many ways for me as a composer. Music is such an integral part of Pixar's storytelling ethos, and I have drawn immensely from their soundtracks in my own compositions.
Getting an opportunity to visit this magical place has left me truly happy and inspired. Thanks a lot for inviting me @helloallisonkim ! Great to see you, and big congrats on Hoppers!
Until next time, Pixar!

Excited to share our latest collaboration with LEGO!

Thanks TED-Ed team for this amazing collaboration!
The myth of Mwindo, an adventure filled African tale, for me, was extraordinarily exciting for two reasons. One, I got to write African music with some very talented musicians all the way from Tanzania! And, two, I got to compose a soundtrack for yet another brilliant animation by @raghavarumugam and @jagritikhirwar !
I am really grateful to @tededanimation for this amazing opportunity yet again, and for giving voice to stories from around the world. This one is Nyanga folklore from the Congo region exploring themes of vengeance, power, and redemption.
And, of course, we have the hard hitting, action packed sound design by @antwon_nguyen
Vocals by Fatuma Mpendu(@verified_datuu ) and Benedict Shirima

One of the many beautiful things about Indian classical music is its deep rooted connection with nature, for instance Raag Basant Bahar, which translates to spring season.
Featured in this short clip is a composition based on Raag Basant Bahar that I composed for the beautiful animated film about Kironmala, a feirce and compassionate warrior princess, featuring violin and Sarangi, a stringed Indian instrument.
What a privilege to work with @helo.dr again on her exquisite animation!

When the Greek God Dionysus decides to wreak havoc, it's no joke! Poor King Pentheus was torn apart by his own mother, who was under a hallucinatory spell by the God.
Scoring this was incredibly fun and challenging, because the tension rises, the tempo quickens, and the chaos intensifies!
Always a pleasure collaborating with @cosmiconionring on his beautiful and fun animations!
And, this wouldn't be the same at all without the amazing sound design by our very own @antwon_nguyen .

Recently, the most amazing @lisalabra granted me the privilege of guest-lecturing (virtually) at the School of Visual Arts in New York for the BFA and MFA programs about music for animation!
We dug into everything from how to communicate with composers, to building a musical language for your film, to the practical (and often confusing!) world of contracts and collaboration.
Grateful for the thoughtful questions, the energy in the room, and the chance to support emerging storytellers.
Thank you, Lisa! Always a pleasure sharing time with you and your wonderful students!
I love writing epic orchestral scores, and I'm binging Stranger Things right now. So, I thought to myself, what if the main title in a parallel universe (or upside down) was written for an orchestra? How would that sound?
Well, here is my take on it. Let me know, epic version of Stranger Things: Yay or Nay?
Regardless, it was a lot of fun experimenting with this 🙃

LONG POST ALERT. TL;DR: The World Animation Summit is awesome! For those of you who have more time on your hands...
My first time attending The World Animation Summit: Some thoughts and reflections.
I am an introvert for whom attending events is a part of my job that I have learnt to enjoy. I'm not always successful at having fun at events because being around a lot of people, talking about myself, asking the right questions, listening, remembering, and doing that over and over is... well, overwhelming.
Animation Summit is an event where I felt right at home, and connecting with creatives, executives, and decision makers felt natural and organic. People are not just hustling and pitching, but having meaningful conversations and getting to know each other at a human level.
One of the highlights was @nic.cabana and @sherry_shugerman 's panel discussion on a digital first approach. You guys are cooking something really special, and I'm rooting for you!
I am grateful for all the people I crossed paths with and people I reconnected with in the last three days, I feel more educated, enriched with new knowledge about where the animation industry is headed, and inspired to create in a time where there are a lot of uncertainties and concerns about the future.
So, a big thanks to Animation Magazine for this amazing event. Can't wait for next year!
