For those who do not know Iām living in Minneapolis after Los Angeles. We are all now witnessing the murders, oppression and outward kidnapping, happening in real time. Unfortunately, I am no stranger to law enforcements violence through out my life.
It is REALLY bad out here. Children seeing their class mates not attending school because of fear. People staying on patrol everywhere with their whistles on guard because of fear, people not getting treatment for their illnesses because of fear. I donāt actually have the language to explain what it feels to live here. The thickness of this terror is felt. My mother is afraid to leave her home. Having to carry our passports. As a Kenyan born, Georgia raised, NY bred Somali-Ethiopian American Black woman, you all see, we are not the only targets.
The only thing that has cut through my own fears and worries is seeing the strength of the community here in Minneapolis. People are really here for each other.
We will fight back.
Please pay attention to whatās happening here in Minneapolis. I will leave you with this poem...
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
FIRST THEY CAME ā BY PASTOR MARTIN NIEMĆLLER
A MFāing reminder! WE AINT NEVER SCARED! Despite what the news or algorithms tell you, aināt no fear here. Itās fashion week in NY and I saw @darian.d.hall post @activelyblack āThereās greatness in our DNAā show and it just filled my cup. Donāt you forget where we come from. Thankful for the Black American folks who got us to where we are. The fight continues and the love prevails.
1. Cecil J. Williams defiantly photographed drinking from a āwhites onlyā fountain in South Carolina 1956.
2. Ruby Bridges was the first black child at 6 years old to integrate an all white school in 1960.
3.Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists on the podium at the 1968 Olympics in protest and black pride.
4.Ben Haith designed the Juneteenth flag in 1997! A banner of freedom and resilience.
5. Legacy legacy legacy. MLK & Malcolmās legacy. Ilyasah Shabazz, Malcolm Xās third oldest daughter, alongside Bernice King, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.ās youngest child.
Beautiful to see! :)

This video was taken in 2022 on a road trip from Ethiopia to Kenya. This trip was marked by betrayal (not the romantic kind) felt like I was dealing with road block after road block. So when we came across LITERAL roadblocks I thought the universe was playing a joke on me. We got a flat tire and folks cheered on (we figured out it was a protest of some sort) nevertheless we were stuck there for a while. I share this story because the past year I feel like all of those rocks represented all the obstacles and bullshit Iāve been through. Iām sure we can all relate. Not on some fake internet facade BS. Death, grief, financial uncertainty, pmdd, mental health, our government, Gaza/Sudan/Congo, family illness, loneliness, falling into bad habits the list goes on and on. HOWEVER despite all of these things I can say I have continued to be resilient and every time I fell down I damn sure got right back up. I am very proud of the woman I have become even with its messiness but whatās life without learning from your mistakes and growing. I couldnāt have done any of this without my village, my community. I feel so lucky to have such a strong support system. Interdependence is the word.
So all of this rambling is to say Iām sure Iām not the only one who has been going through it. Some have bounced back and some are still in the trenches but at least we have each other. Iām going to try and have some joy this weekend and dance @everydayppl so all my friends please join me while we rejoice in the fact that life cant break us down, especially now.
Last announcement Iām leaving LA in the fall. To who knows where yet, maybe my mamaās place first 𤣠aināt no shame in that. So letās have fun this summer!!
Excuse any grammatical errors Iām speaking from the heart and not ChatGPT

MIAMIIII! Aside from playing in the sun, seeing art and dancing. There is something that is happening in Florida that I find very alarming. (Hence the side eye in the second photo) Florida has banned AP African American Studies and is restricting what students can learn about race, racism, and Black history. This is part of the stateās Stop W.O.K.E. Act, which prohibits teaching critical race theory and even bans projects like the 1619 Project that highlight Black contributions to society.
Books by authors like Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou are being pulled from schools.
DONāT LET THEM ERASE BLACK AMERICAN HISTORY.
See below more information on how to help! Ps look for me at the @sunhavenfoundation table at @everydayppl tonight! If you want to get on the guest list click the link in bio and donate!
š¬ Everyday People is excited to be supporting the @sunhavenfoundation with our Miami Art Week edition event. Sunhaven Foundation is a Miami-Dade County-based nonprofit organization dedicated to bridging gaps in cultural education and supporting Black authors, history, and narratives maintaining their rightful spot in the classroom and in young childrenās lives. Beyond their literature focus, they work to empower underserved communities, particularly young children and single parents, by providing essential resources, opportunities, and programs aimed at fostering self-sufficiency and personal growth.
As we kick off our event at Art Basel Miami, weāre raising funds for the Black History Book Fair. In a state where book bans and the removal of AP African American History and critical race theory are a reality, weāre taking action. Partnering with the Sunhaven Foundation, weāre creating a book fair for high schoolers to ensure they never forget their history. Letās stand together and make an impact! šHit the link in the bio for additional info and how to donate.
