“There’s so much pathos in this object”Ry Rocklen talks about seeing abandoned trophies in a thrift store and thinking about what they become after they lose their owners. Objects that used to mean something, now just sitting there.

@qualitycoinsyv is delighted to announce its participation in the @highdesertartfair opening this Saturday and Sunday, March 28th and 29th. The fair takes place at the Pioneertown Motel from 10am - 5pm. We will be in room 19! @ryrocklen and @ryan_schneider_ have curated an array of artists from the High Desert, Los Angeles, and beyond. Artworks will be accessibly priced and can be taken home directly from the fair. Quality Coins' proceeds from sales will go to two important causes impacting our desert community. Half will go to fight destructive and egregious development in the heart of Joshua Tree @protectjoshuatree . Lovemore Ranch, a proposed 64 unit gated community, threatens 18 acres of Joshua Tree Woodlands and puts the community at risk from flooding and sewage runoff. The other half of our proceeds will go toward Morongo Basin Solidarity, which provides aid and support to immigrants facing ICE and Border Patrol targeting in the High Desert. Every purchase helps protect our land and our people. Pioneertown Motel 5240 Curtis Rd, Pioneertown, CA 92268 Saturday and Sunday, March 28th and 29th 10am - 5pm in room 19. Had the pleasure of spending some time in Ry Rocklen’s desert studio. Here, everyday stuff gets stretched into something uncanny. Paper towels and found objects aren’t just materials, they’re a way of seeing: a slow, meticulous transformation that makes you look twice.

Delighted to share “Torch Cafe”, an art award and edition I produced for the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara. This ceramic object uses a photograph from the Metropolitan Museum of Art of an ancient “torch holder” that has been glazed to one side. Its back has become a carrier of a form from our modern times, a stack of disposable coffee cups. “Torch Cafe” is a synthesis of ancient and contemporary objects that plays with the tropes of trophies and awards. It is a vehicle for remembering, recognition, and celebration. Was wonderful to see these awards be given to a handful of incredible artists in Santa Barbara a few weeks ago. The torches have been passed and their cups have been filled with honors and accolades. Was a very special evening. Art Award Recipients (from left to right) @gabrielaxruiz @manjee @maryheebner Dr. JoAnn Kuchera-Morin @dianathaterstudio You too can come to possess “Torch Cafe” while lending your support to @mcasantabarbara and the many fabulous artists the museum works with.   Torch Cafe (Cup from a torch-holder, Cyprus, 6th century BCE from The Met Collection) 2025 6 x 8.75 x 2.75 inches Ceramic, glaze, glaze decal Edition of 5 $1,200 each Please contact @mcasantabarbara for further inquiry. Los Angeles, CA– In collaboration with Heidi Hahn and Tim Wilson, Michael Kohn Gallery is thrilled to present Painting All Together. The group exhibition extends the ongoing dialogue of Painting as Is—a conversation grounded in the belief that painting remains a vital, self-reflexive medium for negotiating material, image, and subjectivity. This fourth installment, centered on artists living and working in Los Angeles, unfolds across five conceptual threads: inscription, object-hood, recollection, event, and projection. These frameworks are neither fixed nor exhaustive; they offer one lens among many for understanding how painting absorbs history while generating new forms and processes. The artists gathered here might belong to multiple modes at once, just as other possible frameworks—painting as language, painting as model, and, of course, painting as is, remain latent within the work. Emerging from a city shaped by climate volatility and pandemic aftermath, the exhibition casts painting as a shared language of persistence: a way of marking time, holding memory, and imagining community. Rather than a prescriptive program, this show asks what it means to paint in proximity; to material, to history, and to each other. Here, painting remains contingent— an ongoing negotiation between presence, perception, and the tactile demands of a world in flux. Painting All Together is on view from August 16 through September 27, 2025 with: Heather Brown Maddie Butler Fritz Chesnut Tomory Dodge Victoria Fu Morteza Khakshoor Tahnee Lonsdale Caitlin MacQueen Allison Miller Aryana Minai Amir Nikravan Matt Rich
