Here’s a peek at some of the more type-heavy surfaces. As the institutional voice, Fairmount Serif helps to anchor a rich, ever-expanding palette of existing vernacular typefaces.

Fairmount Serif originated from a deep dive into Philadelphian typographic history. In a search for type references that balanced the industrial quality of American sans-serifs in the 1930s with a classical sensibility, Hess Neobold came to the forefront. Its designer, Sol Hess, had attended PMSIA—the school that eventually evolved into the museum itself—and later succeeded Frederic Goudy as art director of Lanston Monotype, based nearby in Philadelphia. We incorporated formal cues from this typeface’s contemporaries and created a type family that reflects both Philadelphia’s character and the classical spirit of the museum’s architecture and collection.

I collaborated with @gretelnyc on the core custom typeface for @philamuseum , Fairmount Serif, named after its beloved neighborhood. The typeface was inspired by American type from the 1930s, and it has a strong kinship to Philadelphia in particular, which I’m excited to dive into here soon. Link in bio for more

The typeface for the New York Botanical Garden serves both as the foundation of their logo and as their primary typeface. The New York aspect is represented by its boldness and a nod to Serif Gothic. The organically lush aspect is conveyed through succulent-like serifs, leaf-like counterforms, and vine-like strokes. The result is aptly named “NY Botanical Gothic.”

I had the honor of working on a custom logo and typeface for cultural institution @nybg with @wolffolins . Such a fun and inspiring collaboration, and I’m excited to see that NYBG is already putting it to good use. Here’s the logo! Will make a post that’s a bit more in depth about the type. Cheers to the team: @janeboynton @chaaaavez @jun.works @forsythmeg @jason7556 @thomaswilder Draeger Gillespie, Yiting Nan, Scott Cress, Etienne Godiard, David Knowles, Catreen Yoon, Tyler King, Ana Camargo, Grace Paik, Erynn Hughes, Remy Laughlin, Katherine Pisarro-Grant, Rachel Cantrell, William Rauscher, Courtney Hickey, Michael Khoury

The two sides of Instacart’s type palette were created with versatility in mind. Both Sans and Contrast have a full corresponding range of optical sizes and weights.
