Congratulations to Rita Feditsa (5th Right), winner of the 2026 @rwcmd Howarth of London Single Reed Prize with a beautiful performance of John Ireland Fantasy Sonata. Well done too to Raphael Hitchen (4th Right), whose performance of Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie was very highly commended.Ruth McDowall, former principal bass clarinet of the BBC Symphony Orchestra was hugely impressed with the standard of entries across the board. Sincerest thanks to @howarthoflondon for its continued support of woodwind playing at RWCMD in sponsoring this prize, and for bringinginstruments and accessories for us to try. What an amazing opportunity for our clarinettists to workshop the Mozart Quintet with the amazing @fibonacciquartet, @rwcmd’s Frost Trust Quartet in Residence, as part of our Chamber Thursdays initiative. Brilliant to have them working cross-departmentally in this way and inspiring us with their beautiful playing and insight.

Judith Weir’s Oboe Concerto was the set work, and we were honored to have Dame Judith with us to adjudicate, alongside the work’s dedicatee, oboist @celiacraigonline. Ellen Wilkinson’s performance was Very Highly Commended. Thanks, as ever to Ian Crowther for his continued support of the department, and for bringing such a wonderful selection of instruments and accessories to try. Thanks too to Catherine Milledge for the outstanding duo support that she offers day in day out to the department.

A short clip of Anna Clyne’s Overflow, performed last week at @rwcmd‘Overflow is a wind dectet inspired by Emily Dickinson’s poem, By The Sea, in which we experience the ocean’s power over the poet’s imagination - both alluring, unsettling and dangerous. The line from which this piece takes its title “Would overflow with Pearl” reminded me of an image from Jelaluddin Rumi’s poem Where Everything is Music whereby the tiniest motion of a pearl on the ocean floor can cause great waves above.’The full performance can be seen over on our YouTube channel, link in bio!Thanks to Madeleine Longbotham, Ellen Wilkinson, Alvaro Hurtado, Hugh Sergeant and Adam Muxworthy for joining us for this thrilling piece!@rwcmdwoodwind #rwcmd #lumaswinds #annaclyne #cardiff #chambermusic
