Violet pigment came from sea snails centuries ago, one of those rare and precious phenomena extracted from nature. You wouldâve almost never seen it.
The 19th century brought the invention of âmauveine,â the first aniline dye. It revolutionized the possibility of purples and violet in art. Claude Monet was a big adopter. And people were ENRAGED!
That holy color had only ever been reserved from religious imagery (and political power) in art. And suddenly, a flower, a cloud, a reflection on water⊠VIOLET VIOLET VIOLET!
Violet is the shifting moods of modern life.
And in my painting âVioletâs Joy,â it is the sudden burst of delight, a sound that escapes from our mouths. It is mirth. It is the flight of a butterfly beyond the edge of your vision. It is adjacent to the sunlightâs warmth on your skin and the split second when twilight gains hold.

I love tulips. Theyâre the flowers that arrive just before Spring, when we are aching for warmth and longer daylight and fresh life. When you buy a bundle of tulips, you never quite know what youâre going to get. Will they open and have surprise colors? Will their petals be frayed like a Van Gogh painting? Will their heads weigh heavy and topple over, suspended and balancing on a leggy stem?
I panted these tulips today. And I love them.
