After twenty years at the Birmingham Museum of Art, including nearly a decade as The R. Hugh Daniel Director and CEO, Graham C. Boettcher, Ph.D., has been appointed Director and CEO of the @norman_rockwell_museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
During his tenure, Graham helped shape the BMA into a more dynamic, ambitious, and community-centered institution. He led the Museum through a period of sustained growth, expanding its national profile through acclaimed exhibitions, strengthening the collection, and deepening engagement with audiences across Birmingham and beyond.
Under Graham’s leadership, the BMA advanced initiatives in education, accessibility, and public programming while fostering meaningful partnerships throughout the community. His vision and scholarship helped position the Museum as both a leading cultural institution and a welcoming space for all who visit.
The BMA’s Board has appointed Chantal Drake, the James Milton and Sallie R. Johnson Deputy Director, to serve as Interim Director and CEO beginning August 1, 2026. Since joining the Museum in 2023, Chantal has provided substantive oversight across all areas of the Museum’s operations and brings extensive leadership experience in museum management, development, communications, and community engagement. Her background and collaborative leadership will help ensure a seamless transition as the Museum continues advancing its mission.
The Board has initiated plans for a national search for the Museum’s next Director and CEO. Graham will continue in his role through July 31, working closely with board leadership and staff to support a smooth and thoughtful transition.
The Birmingham Museum of Art is deeply grateful to Graham for his decades of leadership and service to the Museum and the City of Birmingham.

Mark your calendars! We have a new exhibition opening THIS WEEKEND!
The BMA's newest exhibition, "Disruption!," invites viewers to witness all forms of disruption by presenting artworks that foreground engagement that actively invokes emotion and inquisitiveness.
Disruption is a prominent practice that challenges peoples’ initial expectations of art and the rules that answer basic questions like “what is art?” and “what can art do?” It invites viewers to look beyond their preconceived notions and scratch beneath the surface to reveal deeper meaning.
The concept of disruption can take many forms, including experimenting with new materials and techniques of expression, visually interrupting the subject of an artwork, and using art as a form of protest to challenge historical narratives.
Stop by this Saturday to be one of the first to see this new (FREE) exhibition!
