WNDX is accepting submissions of short works (<15 mins) made by prairie-based Queer filmmakers between 2017-2026 for consideration for a special program curated by Alex Nguyen. wndx.org/submissions DEADLINE: Apr 30, 2026 ABOUT THE CURATOR The goal of curator Alex Nguyen (they/them) – or better known as local Drag Queen, Ruby Chopstix – is to empower, inspire, and help Queer BIPoC in all they do. In 2024, they were inaugurated as Rainbow Resource Centre’s first ever Drag Artist in Residence. They have also been setting the work in by creating The Velvet Rope: An all BIPoC Showcase, and becoming the Drag Events Coordinator for Ai-Kon, Winnipeg’s Anime Convention! They are the main subject of “Becoming Ruby” a short documentary that premiered at Hot Docs in April 2025. It's been two weeks since The Velvet Rope and the GORGE Festival. We pulled off something so grand that I'm still in disbelief it happened. This was not just a drag event; it was so much more than that! It was the community coming together in support and love, something so special that I wish we could do again and again and again. During the big showcase on Friday, there were so many moments where I cried happy tears. The whole time, I just thought to myself, "This is really happening. These performers are killing it. This show is finally where I want it to be. It's finally here. We're finally here."  The process of making this chapter was a lot of work, a lot of hours, but all of it paid off in the end. I would be lying if I didn't say I was doubting myself the whole time and wondering if this was too big for me. From making those videos and editing them to weekly rehearsals and planning out the show, it was the most intense show I've ever produced. I said this the night of, and how when you're an event planner or artist, you see all the flaws and are the only one experiencing the process. It can be tough… But to hear all the cheers, the screams, the laughter, the cries, and the performers lighting up under that spotlight… I just knew that we created something special.
