The High Line (
@highlinenyc ) recently unveiled its fifth Plinth commission. The Light That Shines Through The Universe is a 27-foot-tall Buddha sculpture created by Tuan Andrew Nguyen (
@tuan.andrew.nguyen ) as an homage to one of the ancient Bamiyan Buddhas destroyed in Afghanistan in 2001 by the Taliban.
@hyperallergic ,
@newyorkermag , and
@theartnewspaper.official among others covered the installation, which will be on display to the public until Fall 2027.
The High Line also opened its first retail shop since 2019, which includes products and artist collaborations. Visitors can purchase pendants of the Buddha’s hands made from the same melted down artillery shells as the sculpture or merchandise inspired by Dinosaur, the beloved larger-than-life pigeon sculpture.
