It's official, The Golden Age of Hijacking won the gold medal award @hkphotobookfest . A big thank you to all the organisers and the jury, I'm beyond made up and it's so lovely that people like the work and the book. A big thank you to @emilystanleymacaulay of @stanleyjamespress who did a stella job of designing the book, really it's a joint award! Thank you to the lovely folks who invited me to tag along for food afterwards, it's always nice to meet new people and make new friends 🥰

I'm absolutely buzzing that The Golden Age of Hijacking has been shortlisted for the @dummyaward25 The jury's statement reads, "This year’s Dummy Award revealed a fascinating paradox: photobooks have never been more polished, yet their essence remains raw, instinctive, deeply personal. Across hundreds of submissions, we saw a striking trend: photobooks as spaces of catharsis, where authors confront personal struggles, past wounds, and fragile identities. The book format becomes not just a means of storytelling, but a tool for self-exploration, healing, and even reinvention". The Dummy Award ’25 shortlist is off around the world, with confirmed stops in Barcelona, Milan, Cologne, Łódź, Prag, Dublin, Bangkok, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile! Congratulations to all the shortlisted artists, I'm in great company and I just hope my book is well received on its exciting tour. Our next Creative Social is a collab with @barnsleyfotocollective and FOTO 2026, Barnsley's first contemporary photography festival. CREATIVE SOCIAL: WOMEN IN PHOTOGRAPHY THU 5 MAR, 6-8PM. FREE ENTRY This year, the British Journal of Photography shared findings from their 2024 research that showed “on average, the women working in the photography industry who took part in the survey earn 30% less than their male counterparts. 55% of the women had experienced gender discrimination in the workplace. Additionally, only 34% of major photography award winners have been women over the past five years.” Standing as both a celebration of women’s contribution to photography and a call for change on industry gender inequality, we invite everyone to join us for an evening of engaging panel discussions, followed by a social and relaxed sharing of works by local female identifying photographers. We’re delighted to be celebrating the practices of emerging and mid career female artists and holding space for conversation and new friendships. Joining us will be panellists Roz Doherty, Lasma Poisa, Sayuri Ichida and Kelly Rankin. Also joined by our panel, is chair Louise Fedotov-Clements, director of Photoworks. Who are the members of COMMUNE? For our first year, we invited a group of artists, writers, researchers, and makers that we feel inspired by In December 2025, after months of secret planning, we posted out a ‘zine and membership form inviting people to join us. We didn’t tell them who the other invitees were (in fact, we still haven’t...until now) Once we received their completed membership forms, they were in We’re hoping to keep communications in-person/ via post, although we concede that some online meetings and emails will be necessary to connect the group (who are all dotted around the UK) For future years, current members will be able to invite new people. The women and non-binary peer group has now come to an end. We've spent a year meeting monthly, taking part in workshops, sharing work and offering supportive critiques. Thanks to @lenslabproject @inalandcreative & @photohubnorth for running great workshops for us and to Bianca for being a wonderful volunteer and stepping in to facilitate when needed. The group was funded by @leedscouncil as part of the Cultural Grants Programme and our meeting space was provided by @headrowhouse so a big thanks to both. After facilitating groups for the last couple of years it's time for a little break and to concentrate on my own work, who knows, maybe 2026 will be the year the Golden Age of Hijacking is finally published, a girl can dream right! Big big thank you to @aidamuluneh for including me in this year's @africa.foto.fair and all the team for making the work look fab. This is the first time my work has been included in a photo festival and I'm absolutely gutted to not be able to get out there myself. This is a very early iteration of my work Dear Leader, exploring the world of male cult leaders, it continues to develop but I'm loving this initial version of it. Another thank you to my pal @chadalexander__ for the pic, the lucky swine is there in person.

This years women and non -binary mentoring group had their pop up exhibition today and what a great job they all did. Thanks to those who took the time to visit and show their support, always appreciated. @b.ian.c.a supported the group in getting the work up in record time this morning and for excellent handling of some last minute hiccups. Thanks to @leedscouncil for the cultural grant that's allowed this years group to happen. And to @christian.campomanes and @headrowhouse for accommodating us once more this year. Big shout out to @alecaarons of @freshaire_ltd for the great work on the prints. And finally thanks to Syd, our toughest critic who was so moved by @kolowiecki work that he shat his pants (image 9).

The current mentoring group I'm facilitating with the assistance of the lovely @b.ian.c.a are having a pop up one day only exhibition @headrowhouse as part of their open house event. Peripheries - a pop up exhibition by 9 local women and non-binary photographers. Born from a year of shared vision and quiet support, these images trace the edges - of place, identity and belonging. Step into the margins. Stay for the stories. It would be great if you could show the group some love and come down and support their endeavour. Remember, the photo world is largely a boys club and without spaces and groups coming together to do it themselves it can be hard to be seen! The Golden Age of Hijacking by Roz Doherty @rozdoherty Air piracy in America was astonishingly commonplace between 1968 and 1972, with over 130 planes being hijacked during this period.  Happening as frequently as once a week, hijackers sought political asylum in Cuba or demanded money as a resolution to their often-desperate circumstances. The Vietnam War had proved to be massively unpopular, the idealism from the 1960s was a thing of the past, and the mass media were stoking public hysteria. All the while, Politics was seen to be failing to end the epidemic of hijacking. Interwoven with this is the psychology of these disenchanted and desperate men who felt that their circumstances were such that the only solution was seen to be the hijacking of a commercial plane. A way out. With self-confidence slipping into foolishness, one audacious act would influence another, like a contagious pathogen. Initially hailed as anti-heroes, the public eventually grew tired of the inconvenience of hijacking, and several proposed madcap schemes to thwart hijackers placed women at the heart of the solutions. The Golden Age of Hijacking is multifaceted, exploring a range of conflicts that played out during this period. Hijackers felt let down by their prized national ethos, the American dream. Wife and partners were left behind to pick up the pieces. Bad male behaviour was not just tolerated but also celebrated. Passengers viewed one another with suspicion. The Federal Aviation Administration and the government did not know how to respond, ultimately causing frustration for the public. Occupying a hybrid documentary space between image, information, and fiction, the work takes a post-documentary approach to explore an unknown yet compelling period of history and asks what, if anything, has changed. on view on our magazine online LINK IN BIO . . . . #contemporaryphotography #visualstorytelling

Today the mentoring group I'm running had the pleasure of attending a workshop run by @_wesfoster_ & @jonathanrturner of @lenslabproject The group made salt prints and tin plate portraits, and I hope it's safe to say that fun was had by all! Crazy to think it's June already and we are pretty much half way through the years mentoring.
