Our next exhibition is Drawing Walking by @johngstell launching Thursday 30th April 6pm, join us for an evening of good art, good company and gallery standard wine 🍾 (Jk ofc we are wine drinkers, we make sure it’s delicious!) Thursday 30th April - Saturday 23rd May This body of work comes from walking as a means of making drawings and drawing as a way of recording walking. Drawings emerge from the movement of the body creating marks, sometimes inflected by moving light sources in the environment. The images in this exhibition show quite mundane outings close to home (to and from the local railway station in Mytholmroyd). The process combines recording objective features of the environment with specific traces that reflect the small gestures that hands perform when walking. The images thus result from both subjective personal experience and also from a kind of scientific mapping of the external world. #culturedale #hebdenbridge

Sign-ups for HEART are now OPEN! HEART will run on Saturdays throughout June from 10-11.30am. HEART is about building the confidence, community and resources to create with courage. I (Bryony) built this mentoring programme to bring people together and tackle the things that stop us creating. Meeting in person at our beautiful studio we tackle what causes blocks and procrastination and how we can overcome them together. Through journaling, self exploration and creative prompts I will set you up to build the creative life you deserve. /mentoring

Drawing Walking - John Stell Thu 30 April – Sat 23 May A series born from walking-as-drawing and drawing-as-walking. These works turn everyday journeys near Mytholmroyd into calligraphic traces, part observation, part personal gesture and part mapping of the world. Each repeated route generates marks that are similar yet never the same. John Stell studied at Leeds College of Art and Design and is currently on the MFA at Manchester School of Art. He also works as a Senior Lecturer at University of Leeds, with an artistic practice rooted in drawing, mapping, and the experience of space. @johngstell

This June we have a long anticipated exhibition by one of In a Land’s own Florence Hutchinson. Don’t miss it! You’re all invited to the private view Thursday 4th June at 6pm. Florence will also be leading a poetry workshop looking at form, constraints and loops. Booking is now open. Florence Hutchinson is a multidisciplinary artist and poet living in Hebden Bridge. She works with mixed media, abstract painting, drawing, spoken word and performance to explore female experiences relating to sexuality, defiance, shame, and societal/capitalist pressure. Additionally, much of her writing draws inspiration from the brutality of the Calderdale landscape, growing up in a post-industrial town, folklore, myth and fragmented memory. #exhibition #culturedale #inaland

Join me for an afternoon of playing with poetic form and constraints. I find experiencing the frustration and resistance creates strange and unexpected writing. The stuff of poetry is free and fluid and constraints create a container to hold it! We will handle found & blackout poetry, burning haibuns, sonnets, ekphrasis and golden shovels. Lots of weird and wonderful prompts. No experience necessary . £15 / £20

Current Exhibition | Drawing Walking John Stell Thursday 30th April - Saturday 23rd May 'This body of work comes from walking as a means of making drawings and drawing as a way of recording walking. The interplay between a regular scheme of arrangement and the irregular marks is visible when the same route is followed on different occasions. In this case, the drawings associated with a given route are similar but not identical. The marks have a calligraphic quality, and the mechanism of arrangement suggests the formation of texts through the placing of characters and symbols in ordered combinations' Open Thursday, Friday & Saturday this week. @johngstell
