DM me to reserve a copy now! 🎹 @cailimusic 🎻 @captainbessiesuave 🥁 @bryancartermusic 📷 @adibop @adibop.on.film When I planned to record this EP, I was pregnant, staring down a time of huge personal change, and several months when I knew I wouldn’t be able to play the saxophone. This was when I was anticipating the arrival of my second child, so I knew a little bit of what I was getting into, in terms of the long spans of time away from the instrument and the music. I had just finished an inspiring and fulfilling tour with three close friends, who are the other members of this Quartet: Caili O’Doherty, Russell Hall, and Bryan Carter. We felt like a very balanced, expansive, and dynamic foursome, and I wanted to make sure to document that energy and exchange. The songs I chose to record were a sampling of the music I was dealing with at that moment - a few new original compositions of mine, and some standards that particularly spoke to me. Never Meet Your Heroes is an original composition of mine, written for a former mentor, who revealed himself to be a not-so-supportive, yet prominent figure on the scene. This tune speaks to the experience of realizing that our heroes are human beings, often with troubled and problematic qualities; it also actively calls out the misogynistic culture of the jazz community, and how commonplace it is to find out that those in power have often cling onto toxic and dated practices that hold back the greater potential of Jazz - the art form that is America’s greatest cultural contribution. Musically, this track takes us on some twists and turns from a slow and sad waltz through a determined, plodding, and ultimately triumphant end. Stream it now on all platforms! Link in bio.
