had a great time over the weekend at @supersonic_fest . i didn't get as many videos/photos as i ought to have so will list some highlights:
- @dame_area_ dark, intense, heavy, perfect
- @melt_banana they're the best at what they do and i really enjoyed the new material
- @oxnmusic somehow they have sounds from deep underground and outer space all at once
- @one.leg.one.eye not only is their music fantastic but chatting to Ian for a few minutes makes you feel like a million quid
- loads more but am tired of typing now!
well done to the crew and big thanks to @oldbort@rosietee@wildforms_@conorboyle27@dmrcr_ for just being a great bunch all weekend.
night one of the big Ty weekender. spotted emmet kelly - probably my favourite living guitarist - crossing camden high st. fantastic gig. eagerly anticipating round 2 tonight in brum
i saw THE MATRIX on a large cinema screen for the first time. this is a film i have seen at home more times than i care to remember. on the big screen is the third of three ways i have experienced THE MATRIX.
the first was one morning after my parents had been out the evening prior to see a film. my mom was emphatic that i needed to know about this film because it was an amazing new scifi film that i was bound to love. i can remember her recalling the most impressive shots and setpieces along with the broad points of the plot. the fated hero, the mentor, the robots. my parents knew that this film was too good and important for me to not know everything i possibly could about it.
a pirate vhs was obtained. i watched it. i won’t pretend that i could fully wrap my head around it but now i knew who Trinity was. i knew the joy of the action choreography. i knew how revolutionary the special effects were.
the film masterfully focuses damn near everything on the centre 1/3 of the frame, ideal for translating to 4:3 home video format. they knew this film was gonna be a video tape people would watch and watch and wear out.
it’s hard to remember a time before i’d seen THE MATRIX. it’s hard to imagine a time before just about everybody on earth had seen THE MATRIX. it is a perfect film. every cylinder in its engine is polished to atomic smoothness for perfect performance. the script, casting, choreography, colour palette, they all function perfectly to deliver the experience of THE MATRIX. it has the magical texture of something undeniable.
i have done my time as a MATRIX hater. i would say things like “oh it’s not actually very original,” “the ideas in it are handled better in mamoru oshii’s GHOST IN THE SHELL.” these are the words and thoughts of a teenager driven to derangement by contrarianism and i hate him. he’s a fool.
THE MATRIX is perfect. so perfect that perhaps it should never have been built on with sequels. although it is cool that the Wachowskis have put out their mad weird stuff under ‘the matrix’ brand.
‘Wake Up’ is the best Rage Against the Machine song.
the devil rides out one final time

i remember the first time DBZ was shown here in Britain. march 2000. @uberted64 and i were determined to watch it thanks to cartoon network’s marketing. we watched it on a small portable tv in the kitchen of a terrace house in Fazeley.
we loved it instantly. the bold characters, the weird not-quite-reality setting, martial arts and aliens. the fast, hard action with wild rhythm. it was like nothing we’d seen before. i think we loved it so deeply and so unique did it feel to us that it coloured nearly all of my experiences since. everything i’ve seen after dragon ball has caught a little bit of its light.
RIP Akira Toriyama
