WHATEVER PAYS THE RENT TAKEOVER 🌞
Whatever Pays the Rent is back with a summer programme offering everything from romance and heartbreak to sweat and tears.
11AM Before Sunrise (1995)
The first instalment in Richard Linklater’s trilogy about two people meeting on a train and deciding to spend an evening wandering through Vienna. Starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy as our two compelling leads in this 90s staple.
As the night unfolds, a quiet intimacy grows between them, knowing it may be their only night together.
1PM Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988)
A wonderfully colourful comedy from Spanish director and writer Pedro Almodóvar (All About My Mother, Volver).
After being dumped by her lover, Pepa finds her life and the lives of those around her spiraling out of control in a deliciously chaotic series of events.
2.50PM Call Me By Your Name (2017)
Based on the book of the same name, Luca Guadagnino takes us to the summer of 1983 where Elio (Timothee Chalamet) falls for his father’s student at his family villa in Italy.
This deserves to be watched in a cinema so you can fully absorb yourself in the feelings of first love and heartbreak soundtracked by Sufjan Stevens.
5.20PM City of God (2002)
With a cast full of first-time actors, this film earned four Oscar nominations and a place in many “100 Films to Watch Before You Die” lists, awarded third place by Film 4.
In the poverty-stricken favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, two young men choose different paths. Rocket is a budding photographer who documents the increasing drug-related violence of his neighborhood, while Zé dives into a dangerous life of crime.
8.15 Midsommar (2019)
The film that put Florence Pugh and director Ari Aster on the map. A modern folk tale that’s weirder, darker and more ambitious than The Wicker Man.
Several friends travel to Sweden to study a a summer festival that is held every ninety years. What begins as a dream vacation turns into a dark nightmare as the mysterious inhabitants invite them to participate in their disturbing festive activities.

Using my first day off in thirteen days to make an appreciation post for my mum who supports all of my events, seems to have every material I can think of in a trunk in her house*, and is always happy to help as long as I keep my cat, or *french accent* “the beast”, out of her way 💖
*the fake hands in the pile of wool in the last photo were bought as a “just in case you need this for an event one day” and have made her jump every morning since
