I’m SO HAPPY that I can finally announce that my album “Mid Air” is being released on 8th September! The album title is inspired by the fleeting, weightless and euphoric moments I’ve had on a dance floor, connecting with people and processing emotions, before the beat drops and brings me back to reality. Mid Air is a collection of songs celebrating love, navigating loss and exploring identity. It’s musically inspired by dance music, it’s is a love letter to the queer clubs I first went to when I was growing up and people I met there and the music I heard that has made me feel more alive and less alone. I wanted to share track 1 with you today, “Loveher” is the first song I wrote that made me feel like I was ready to make a solo project, so it feels like a good place to start the album and to share now. Loveher is an attempt to distill some of the intimate, delicate moments of the early days of my relationship. Of shared moments of navigating visibility and celebrating pride in our own individual ways. It felt new but also very honest to sing the words I love her, just a true reflection of who I love. I can also recognise a fragility and growing of trust and friendship between @fredagainagainagainagainagain and I in this song. Fred and I met through songwriting for other artists, this was the first song we made together that I felt I had the confidence to say, I think this song is for me. My rework of @planningtorock ‘s song The One, out now 🖤🖤 This is a very special one to me, I’ve been a fan of Planningtorock for a long time and have so much admiration and respect for the music they make, the person they are, the journey they have been on coming out as trans and what they do for and mean to the community 💞🩵💞🩵 I’m so grateful for the friendship we’ve grown and the connection and understanding I feel between us as queer artists. When I first heard the beautiful original track ‘The One’, I was struck by the emotion sitting just beneath the surface - that sense of longing that feels both personal and universal. I wanted to honour the emotion in the original, letting the heart of the song breathe whilst taking its hand and bringing it into the dance floor. Thank you so much Jam for sharing the opportunity to rework your song that means a lot to a lot of people but perhaps the biggest fan I know of the original is Vic, so to have her in mind when working on it meant a lot to me. (Please do go and listen to the original too!) One of the most rewarding things about this rework project is how it celebrates not only the songs I’ve written but also the wonderful friendships I’ve made along the way through my music. I met Romy back in 2011 whilst I was touring W, the album that The One is from, and over the years we have watched each other grow through our music. I remember visiting Rom and her wife, @viclentaigne another incredible artist, back in early 2020 and listening to Rom’s sketches for her brilliant debut solo album ‘Midair’ and being moved to tears at their honesty and beauty. I think for both of us, music is how we got to be who we really are and how we found our community. The lyric ‘We Dance to Grow, we Grow to Give’ still resonates with me today, and I believe for both of us. Romy’s passion for music and her talent for creating it blows me away and together with the amazing music producer @lucaperry__ , she managed to transcend the love longing in my original all those years ago into a new and joyous love song.
