With THIN WALLS being nominated for Best Live Action Short Drama and Best Performance in a Live Action Short Drama at the Canadian Screen Awards (@thecdnacademy ), I wanted to share some clips that highlight the film’s atmosphere — as well as the intensity of nominee @leelawson_ in the leading role. This film was always intended to be a character-driven thriller — never sacrificing nuanced, internal moments just for the sake of advancing the plot. Inspired by the British realist, working class-set tradition, as well as the measured editing of Steve McQueen’s projects, the film’s ‘heart’ lies in its central relationship. THIN WALLS | 500T 35mm (+ expired 500T 35mm) “When a familiar face moves into the apartment next door, a sexually stunted couple attempt to be intimate, despite the haunting sounds beyond their thin walls. I wanted to really ‘swing for the fences’ by shooting on 35mm for this short film. Jean, a young woman who is struggling with intimacy, gradually descends into the depths of her own mind. I found that 35mm was best suited to capture the grit of the characters’ working class setting, as well as the dream-like nature of its climax. We also wanted to pay homage to the psychological thrillers that inspired us through this format — like Fincher’s The Game, Coppola’s The Conversation, Hitchcock’s Psycho and Rear Window. The images felt so inherently impressionistic on celluloid. Film is a way for me to tap into my own childhood memories. I often reflect on my time sitting behind a television set, watching old films where celluloid was the only option of the time. I’m glad that I was able to collaborate with the master @marauder_midnight on the poster for my short film @thinwallsshort . I remember going through university with many of his posters serving as wallpapers on my phone. Glad to call this one my own! He did an excellent job of capturing the tone of my short thriller, as well as its more impressionist elements with this painterly composition. Amazing news today! THIN WALLS has been nominated in the Best Live Action Short Drama category at the Canadian Screen Awards @thecdnacademy . And our lead actress @leelawson_ has been nominated for Best Performance in a Live Action Short Drama for her commanding work on screen. Thank you to the @thecdnacademy for recognizing our hard work on this project — we’ve been through hell and back to get this made! And thank you to the programmers that pushed for this project to be included in their festival lineup, we wouldn’t have gotten nominated without you. Throughout COVID, I had saved years-worth of my money to make this debut project, a major leap of faith. It was a dream to work with such an amazing cast and crew — all of the running around to find leftover 35mm film, ‘discreetly’ constructing a wall in an occupied apartment building, and hustling in between takes has been worth it. It was really important to get a sense of this apartment complex’s space for @thinwallsshort , even when characters weren’t in the frame. We wanted to tell a story that felt peripheral to the environment that the characters occupied — as if it were one of many stories that could be taking place within the building. This meant editing the film to not just prioritize the plot, but these liminal spaces (all captured on 35mm).
