Starting this semester, we are offering regularly scheduled Riso training bootcamp workshops for graduate students that will be open to all SVA MFA students from any program to enroll in. These two part, eight hour workshops each serve as a rigorous introduction to the Risograph printing process. By the end of each course, participants will be proficient in the Risograph printing process and be able to work in the RisoLAB independently. These workshops include access to the RisoLAB for the remainder of the Spring 2026 semester.
Additionally, we have created a special Access category for graduate students who have already completed a training or CE course at the RisoLAB in the past who wish to sign up for access.

In this introductory workshop participants will learn the basics of spot color Risograph printing and how to layer limited colors for vibrant results. The first session will be spent learning primary functions of the Risograph, creating analog prints, and preparing digital files for print. In the second session, students will have the opportunity to print pre-prepared work (digital or analog) using the learned techniques. Participants must come with a finished design they would like to print. Everyone will take home 20 copies of their pre-prepared print (1-4 colors, letter or tabloid size), 1 print from everyone else in attendance, and a variety of other RISO-printed ephemera.

COURSE INFO
This course delves into the evolving identity of photography, with a particular focus on ephemeral digital imaging and the materiality of printed matter. We will examine the current visual vernacular and how physical and digital archives, consumer technology, and the Internet have reshaped the ways we produce and consume images. Students will learn to deconstruct their photographs and expand their creative possibilities by making photo-based Risograph prints. We will cover the technical fundamentals of translating photographic images into Riso prints and develop self-directed projects in the form of print portfolios or small publications. Throughout the course, we will explore color separation and printing techniques while engaging in discussions around mechanical reproduction, the archive, authorship, sampling, and remix culture-situating these themes within the broader context of contemporary imaging, media, and consumer culture.

A few weekends ago the RisoLAB collaborated with the @nyplpicturecollection on a pilot workshop led by former RisoLAB Artist in Residence @virtual.artwalks ! This two day workshop was held between the New York Public Library's main branch at Bryant Park and the RisoLAB. On day one, attendees spent time searching through the Library's picture collection and selected images that formed the basis of Risograph prints created from manually assembled collages printed using a 100% analog process.
