A Club, The Blue Lady Since 2013, the Pygmalions association has hosted France’s largest annual body painting event as part of the Les Imaginales festival (a celebration of fantasy and science fiction) in the town of Épinal, located in the Vosges region. Kazim Christophe Cwikla, the association’s founder, was originally inspired by the idea of swapping the solitude of painting on canvas for a collective practice. On the occasion of the gathering that took place at the end of May, bodies became living canvases. Some forty international artists—each boasting their own world—took part in a contest with a shared theme: this year, James Cameron’s film Avatar set the tone and prevailing color of the creations. (archives) A Point of View, Jack-of-All-Trades Born in 1974, Olivier Millagou is a French artist who lives and works in Bandol on the French Mediterranean coast, which is of some importance here. Considerate of his surroundings, he is careful not to add to the world anything that might threaten it, using materials he has salvaged from the trash. He has tried his hand at painting, a new endeavor for him, experimenting with abandoned frames to create pictures inspired by everyday life. His approach, as close as possible to mundane reality, exudes something special. Profane n°21 available at @stoked_stoned Seoul ❤️ It all begins with Thomas Saint-Guillain’s turquoise hand (p. 5), followed by Charles Villa’s collection of images that have turned blue over time (p. 78), then Anne Jaffrenou’s 3,500 graceful skies kept in the dark (p. 118), and finally bodies painted in Avatar colors photographed by Pauline Hisbacq (p. 228). A shaded issue immersed in blue. Where does this primary color which resists and persists in our retinas lead us? We would like to ask Jérôme Pélégry if he was ever tempted to paint the face in one of his portraits blue, in the style of Pierrot the Fool (p. 186). Blue, a strange premonition. But other colors emerge: green, red, yellow-the colors printed on the packaging of Western products that Eddy Ekete salvages for his festival in Kinshasa, DRC, where he showcases the devious power of colorful consumerism that ends up as waste in the city’s overflowing streets (p. 218). We would need to gather all the pigments and invent worlds where color soothes and heals. Such as Josqlin’s (p. 132), for example. Or Florian Coppier’s meditation-inducing fractal images (p. 196). Or simply live in the snug gray shade (p. 144). And live happily. Vincent, François, Paul, and the others, A double life A gallery of exclusively male portraits comes to life under the brush of Jérôme Pélégry, a legal official in a notary’s office by profession, and a naïve painter and collector of stories by passion. Who are these men? Where do they come from? What are their names, their stories, their reason for being here? For a fleeting moment, they feel familiar. One reminds us of a friend, another of an old cousin, a lover, a colleague, a stranger by the lake, or a singer. Yet their creator is careful to reveal little about them. His aim is to endow them with emotions, experiences, a past, which will shift according to each spectator’s imagination. Solisoccasussaccuphilia @radaboukova , visual artist, won the Profane Prize at the second major collections competition held with the @le19m , with a set of garbage bags. Her first specimen came from a supermarket in the Netherlands, ten years ago: on the 30-litre roll, a yellow sun over a blue sea appeared to her in the cutout for the sliding ties. Since then, her collection has been tracking the supreme star across around a hundred specimens, still wrapped, stored flat or framed. An OCD, Eye in the sky Anne Jaffrenou, a graduate of the École nationale supérieure d’arts fine arts school in Paris-Cergy and Rutgers University, USA, produces images for exhibition spaces. She specializes in immersive projections, interactive stations, new languages, and other visual innovations. However, for ten years she has discreetly focused on a vision of disconcerting simplicity. Framing a bit of sky, artlessly, is the very essence of it. A project that stems from “temporal tenacity” as she puts it, an obsession that never leaves her and which she documents here.
