Mackerel Flare is a textface that walks a fine line between sans and serif, structure and ornament, wood and stone. Its square-like skeleton introduces a sense of foundation and solid presence to its proportions, common in mid-century neo-grotesque typefaces or woodblock letters. At the same time, its rigidity is balanced by stylish flares inspired by humanist features, sourcing from stone-carving, calligraphy, and a touch of the hand.
Mackerel is named after the mackerel fish; the curvature of its bones is sometimes cited as a reference by airplane engineers — a craft that requires both anatomy and elegance, which exists at the core of this typeface.
