a sonic library of emotion
created to attempt to shine a light on alexithymia (emotional blindness)
translating to ‘no words for emotion’,
leaving people unable to name, place, or fully understand their emotions
seed is for giving space for people to explore emotions, feelings, or a state of being in the absence of words, through sound
giving space for those struggling to navigate and express these emotions in ‘conventional’ ways to embark on exploration and a new method of communication, or a challenge for those more able ~ to put themselves in the shoes of those who aren’t
alexithymia usually effects those on the spectrum, people with bpd as well as those with major depressive disorder
seed will currently take form as a ‘mix’ series and will feature vastly different people and creative processes
not everyone will be a dj ~ and these aren’t meant to be mixes as we all know them, they won’t be conventional or even always cohesive
i hope that this space can foster exploration, understanding, and empathy

By chance, as I started to wander outside of my ambient safe space into downtempo realms- getting into the works of trickpony, Stone, Saffron Bloom, Car Culture, Maara, OK EG, labels like naff, Wax’o Paradiso, Step Ball Chain - I came on board to work with Morcheeba.
Arguably up there with some of the innovators of trip-hop, it was so interesting and insightful to sit in on interviews of them thinking back to the 90s, putting out music and it being referred to as elevator music- or being the coffee table book of the industry. Especially interesting at a time when I was developing a new found love for the genre in its current form, immersing myself in the forward thinking sound that was undoubtedly shaped by the earlier Morcheeba records.
Now, I talk to Skye Edwards & Ross Godfrey (Morcheeba), alongside someone making waves in developing a reimagined and futuristic meld of trip-hop, dub and forward-thinking psychedelia softi.
When I think of my favourite psychedelic music, ambient gatherings- hazy, dimly lit, cushions on the floor cuddle puddles, it seems so world apart to think of the initial reception that Morcheeba had. So, let’s get into it.

ray has an intuitive and emotive touch with ambient music, and weaves deeply moving sets which have an ethereal magic to them. ray and I constantly send each other music to check, both being drawn to the emotional energy of ambient.
ray runs the platform @seedspectral , which shines a light on emotional blindness: inviting people to explore emotions through sound, and I am so excited to hear their set on April 17th.

sundays have always been my favourite day of the week. where possible, i always try to make space for grounding, for self care, for shaking stagnant energy and moving into the new week with intention- leaving behind what doesn't serve. settling into the shift with a kind, gentle, forgiving stillness. i tried to soundtrack that state of being in this set
it was a blessing to be able to set the base for the afterglow. to be able to emulate what i hope for sundays to a bunch of cuties who came to the space with open hearts, these spaces are so incredibly important ~ queer afterglows are a beautiful thing to be part of

+ some from the favourites. my lovely friend reminded me after my post yesterday that life isn't linear and age isn't necessarily a marker ~ so i just wanted to share more words:
it's never so black and white, and sprinkled amongst the year i've had some joy, some love, some wins, some success, dances, giggles, embraces - all that beaut stuff. i'm incredibly proud and so so grateful. but these past couple of years have generally put me on my arse. for fear of sounding/seeming juvenile, i've held the true extent of it internal. it cost me a lot, and it could've cost me everything. to feel as though everything's meant to click in your 30s is such a myth, and can become a mind prison. the air of 'pull yourself together' can be isolating and can prove fatal. the goalposts are different for a lot of us, i beggggg we start meeting each other with more grace. it's just one big ongoing wip enit x
3.1!! mad. this time last year, i got a new camera for my birthday (ty lew), and by weird coincidence ive not had much film developed since.
here's some selections of good times over the year, there's many people not pictured who also made it (+ many many more photos)
everyone told me that life gets better in your 30s, and i just think we need to start being honest about the fact that for a lot of us, it gets even harder. may we all get to be able to live to enjoy the fruits of our labour x

i thought it important to stay true to the emotions that birthed seed. so the first one is from me
i found this process very difficult, got stuck in the headspace of wanting to make it a good ‘mix’ but it just not working while staying true to these feelings. and i realised that it’s not meant to be make sense, feeling these emotions simultaneously is jarring, it’s abrupt highs and lows, it’s stop and start, it’s silence. cold and warm. it’s the complete disruption of flow following slight cohesion- conflicting. it's abruptly flitting through altering soundscapes
i had a go at this a few times, and this version was my last attempt. i cried the whole way through and it was on that very spicy full moon, it’s raw- but it’s honest

it’s no secret that i’ve not been good for a while now (yes, again), and i’m in no way out of the woods. but there’s some sense of coming back to myself, even though the person i was has been disassembled - a new form to make myself familiar with. in the midst of this bad boy battle with my brain, i’ve dreamed up a project that brought me a bit of light. i’m immortalising that i’m proud of it now, before my brain tries to take it away and tell me otherwise. i’ll be putting it out into the world in a few days.
a huge thank you to the people who have truly seen me- even through some destructive and stupid behaviour. have still held me down, held my hand and held me accountable. i love you x
