NOW ON VIEW I Raphaël Barontini | Antwerp Art Weekend Mariane Ibrahim presents at 12 Antwerp Through May 24, 2026 On the second floor, the gallery presents works by Raphaël Barontini, following his major solo exhibition at Palais de Tokyo (2025). Barontini’s practice brings together painting, costume, and textiles to reconsider representation and the construction of history—shifting attention toward the ways images are authored, performed, and circulated. His work resonates strongly in Antwerp, as Barontini consciously draws from the visual language of Flemish Baroque painting. Monumentality and theatricality are central to his practice, and the rhetoric of portraiture, constructed through ornamental dress, sumptuous color and material symbolism, is reactivated in his work as a counter-baroque gesture, one centered on the Caribbean and the reclamation of diasporic figures of power. Join Raphaël Barontini and Sandrine Colard for a special artist tour presented by Mariane Ibrahim at 12 Antwerp as part of Antwerp Art Weekend. Bringing together painting, costume, and textiles, Barontini’s presentation reconsiders representation and the construction of history through layered visual narratives that examine the ways images are authored, performed, and circulated. In conversation with curator, writer, and scholar Sandrine Colard, the tour will explore how Barontini draws from the visual language of Flemish Baroque painting while centering Caribbean histories and diasporic figures of power. Through monumentality, theatricality, and richly symbolic materiality, the artist reimagines portraiture as a space for reclamation and historical revision, creating a resonant dialogue within the context of Antwerp and its artistic legacy. 📆 Thursday, May 14 I 6 - 7 PM 📍 12 Antwerp, Kattendijkdok-Oostkaai 12, 2000 Antwerp, Belgium #marianeibrahimgallery #marianeibrahim #antwerpartweekend #12antwerp

Last week opened "A Kind of Paradise – Colonial-Era Photography in Contemporary Art" at the @museumrietberg in Zurich, Switzerland ; curated by @nanina_guyer_ A group of twenty renowned artists explore the current state of this photographic heritage across four thematic sections in A Kind of Paradise – Colonial-Era Photography in Contemporary Art, acting as archivists, counterpoints to the colonial gaze, protective forces, and powerful storytellers who make space for hidden stories. Formed of photographs, textiles, films, and sculpture, their collages expand the medium’s boundaries and bring together questions about their own identity and collective memories. I created a new textile work for this show titled "The golden ladies" accompanied by an incredible unreleased sound piece by Mike Ladd @likemaddladd . In coproduction with @kanal.centrepompidou The show is open until September 6th.

NEWS I Raphaël Barontini at the Toronto Biennial of Art   We congratulate @raphaelbarontini on his invitation to participate in the fourth edition of the Toronto Biennial of Art at the Royal Ontario Museum, on view from September 26–December 20, 2026.   Titled “Things Fall Apart”, this edition is shaped by curator Allison Glenn’s research-driven and site-responsive approach. TBA 2026 centers on artists whose practices engage rupture as a generative force—reconsidering histories, geographies, and systems that shape contemporary life while proposing new ways of understanding the present.   We are thrilled to see Barontini among a cohort of over 30 artists and collectives from across the globe. This prestigious invitation celebrates Barontini’s practice, which challenges the historical canon surrounding cultures and territories shaped by slavery and colonization. Through paintings, flags, banners, tapestries, and ceremonial capes, he reimagines power, its rituals, and its representations, while opening space for plural narratives and new imaginaries grounded in diasporic histories and collective memory.   [Artist Portrait of Raphaël Barontini, 2025.
