💭 “We are still remembering the future,” says photographer Omar Victor Diop, who created Diaspora, a work reflecting on how African history was once told with closed eyes.
🎨 Inspired by historical European paintings, Diop reimagines the lives of African men who played key roles in Europe between the 16th and 19th centuries.
📸 In each portrait, he adds a football-related object: a nod to the present. This highlights the parallel between then and now: these historical figures were celebrated and excluded across Europe, much like African footballers who are both idolised and discriminated against today.

Launching party of Touki, my collaboration with @bernardaud in New York City!
Thanks to all who showed up to discover our limited edition handmade porcelain sculpture. Touki is a symbolic representation of all the strangers, walkers and dreamers of this troubled world. It is a celebration of the universal right to dream of a better land, a better future.
The sculpture is on display, and available for purchase at Bernardaud’s boutique on 499 Park Avenue.

Je suis conscient qu’à l’ère du « moi » suprême, du besoin irrépressible que nous éprouvons collectivement d’immortaliser notre quotidien par des selfies et autres souvenirs digitaux empilés en désordre et en abondance sur les réseaux sociaux, l’on pourrait paresseusement qualifier mes œuvres d’autoportraits. Mais en offrant mon visage à des ancêtres disparus, fictifs ou réels, je m’efface pour les faire vivre et pour les laisser nous (re-)parler de leurs combats passés ou actuels ; chacun d’entre eux ayant eu à vivre sa propre odyssée que nous donnons dans cette exposition à voir aux visiteurs. » Omar Victor Diop.

Donner vie à Touki n’a pas été chose facile pour les différents ateliers de notre Manufacture. Cette sculpture est un hommage aux savoir-faire de la porcelaine : le modelage, la gravure, la couleur, la peinture et même la technique de la lithophanie, utilisée pour éclairer son voyage ✨
