When was the last time I dreamt up future music? The Berlin summer when Bonjay demo’d ‘Lush Life’? Maybe when @saintberenice joined me in J.A. and we recorded vocals by the guinep tree? In both cases, I went in with songs to finish, not new music to discover. So, I’m very happy to share that I was selected to be a PHI Nord Music Artist-in-Residence. I’ll join @honeydrippp for a co-residency. Last year, Honeydrip and I became fast friends through a shared love of body bass + our pals @equiknoxxmusic . Since then, we’ve researched and presented in Jamaica, performed in a bass-centred sound installation, and hand-pressed a record together. So, kinship is there. For this residency, though, we’ll swap strengths — I’ll help reignite her vocal practice + she’ll help expand my production practice.  It’s coming up quickly! I don’t think either of us feel prepared, but surrender is the perfect way. Perfect timing, too. My solo record heads into mastering soon. It’s time to start envisioning beyond this record... What a gift to play + learn + teach + dream. Looking forward to swimming in music + nature. Bless up, @direphi . ABOUT PHI NORD: PHI North is a residency designed for Canadian-based musicians offering a unique opportunity for artists to delve into and fine-tune their musical projects. The program provides a two-week creative retreat at a riverside lodge in the Laurentian mountains, complete with exclusive access to a recording studio and technical support from an in-house engineer. This residency enables artists to break away from their daily routines and wholly focus on the exploration and experimentation of their artistic pursuits.

The last time I performed solo in Ottawa, I opened for Etta James, Jully Black, and John Lee Hooker Jr. at Bluesfest. To prepare, I read Miss James’s autobiography... had her discography on repeat... just obsessed! So, I felt the heft of names on the loaded line-up. But I was really young. I didn’t *fully* grasp the weight of the past those soul and blues legends carried.  I realize now that opening the stage as a new(ish) Black artist equally obsessed with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tanya Stephens, and Bill Withers, I was tugging at the thread that pulls our shared Black musical history into Black sonic futures. We sound like many things. This Saturday, I return to my hometown for Pique Fest. This time, a 1-gyal act. This time, more conscious of what it means for @honeydrippp ’s future dub + @montrealsteppers body music + @sanfarafina ’s nice-up, mix-up set, and my Femmehall rawness to play the same bill.   The Seeds We Carry & Pique Fest Sat. And, what I’ve learned from dancehall, moments like this act as insistence. Insisting on our presence... our upfulness... our full + unique expressions. I want to share/learn what it’s meant to pursue a solo music vision across so many ways: in studios in Jamaica and studios in Canada… with dancehall-raised audio engineers and jazz school educated co-producers… relying on cool music software and warm intuition. Back-and-forth, back-and-forth... between these spaces...the music carried me. What happened to the sound in these different contexts? What happened to me through these different ways of making? “It’s a big deal,” people keep telling me. April 18, I play solo at @lincolncenter . I join @asmkobayashi for the @mayleetodd -curated “Women & Non-Binary Artists in Tech” series. It *is* a big deal, but not for the usual reasons. I’ve basically been performing my whole life. Started as an 8-year old, competing in Gospel competitions every other summer. Up to 30 hrs of rehearsal/week. Touring Ottawa to Toronto in a school bus full of 6-12-year olds. We’d sleep 3 to a bed + be up at 6am for hair, warm-ups, and spoonfuls of olive oil, lemon and honey. I’d compete in the ‘female solo’, ‘small ensemble’, ‘large ensemble’, ‘junior choir’, and Bible quiz categories. A 12-hour day on a diet of champagne cola and beef patties. I don’t ever remember being tired. I’ve always been prepared to perform. Next week, though. It’ll be only my second time playing a full solo set of my own productions. I’m not worried about the music. I feel strong in it. The record is like me. Tough & Tender. Plus, I’ve got the best on my side: Robin Dann of @saintberenice and @laaain_music co-produced with me. And my “uncles” Sly & Robbie let me produce their drums & bass. For the live show, @internetparticipation is guiding me through it. Still, my body feels new to me every rehearsal. So, I can’t tell you *precisely* what to expect. But I can share that voice, bass (not low end. BASS!) and rawness are through lines. I can share that this is a “naked” show. A mid-2012 laptop....my Femmehall tunes... a mic...my body...and that’s it. Grounded by Canadian self-consciousness. Fuelled by my inherited Jamaican-Grenadian braggadocio. My U.S. solo debut *is* a big deal. But the same way every show has been a big deal ever since my Gospel days. Every show is a faith act. I move as the spirit moves me. And, I say it in this vid, “I’m discovering this as you’re watching this.” This is a live work-in-progress. The unknown brings up a nervous excitement. I like it.
