Cellist, educator, and classical music humorist Nicholas Canellakis goes record shopping at NYC’s Westsider Records in our very first episode of Further Listening, a new YouTube series where we go record hunting with artists to learn about the music that moves them.
Called a “superb young soloist” by The New Yorker, Nick is a Manhattan native who has played with CMS since 2008, originally starting in our Bowers program. His new film, Mallory’s Ghost, premiered at SXSW in March.
Located mere blocks from Lincoln Center, Westsider is a historic record store known (among other things) for its vast selection of used classical LPs.

@stevenbankssaxophone is putting the classical saxophone front and center on his beautiful debut album “Cries, Sighs, and Dreams.”🎷
Banks was the first saxophonist to earn an Avery Fisher Career Grant and is joined by fellow AFCG honorees @doverquartet on the album's title track, which was written by Banks and inspired by composer Hector Berlioz’s reaction to hearing the saxophone for the first time. An impressed Berlioz wrote: “It cries, sighs, and dreams. It possesses a crescendo and can gradually diminish its sound until it is only an echo of an echo of an echo…”
