When Darell walked into @projectfunction.santamonica in March 2024, he was facing what seemed like insurmountable challenges. Most people don’t realize how much posture can influence how you feel on a daily basis. Mindset, behaviour and posture. You can’t come in and not “think” about how you’re moving. You can’t come in and train for an hour and hope it gets rid of all your sloppy patterns. The more imbalanced the body is, the harder the brain has to work, the harder the central nervous system has to function in order to try and work around a dysfunctional body with dysfunctional facial layers and dysfunctional bone formations. The body is so interconnected and intertwined. Cognitive decline can contribute to poor posture as poor posture can contribute to cognitive decline. So process what you learn in the gym. Whether it’s our current or past selves, many of us know what it’s like to wear ourselves out in the gym chasing sweat, calories burned, elevated heart rates, or pointless weightlifting PRs. While we may hit certain goals, we need to question: what’s the point? One of my biggest takeaways from @functionalpatterns has been gaining a clearer reference point for what matters most. The North Star is negentropy: creating better order and structure, and in doing so, supporting regeneration. In other words, is what you are doing helping things function better and more efficiently, or is it simply adding more wear and tear? And this is not just about physical training. It is a useful framework for thinking about every aspect of life. I am still working on this myself, but having that reference point makes decision making a lot easier. In this clip, my client Bart explains that in the past he could grind through 30 reps without much thought. But when you are accounting for your structure, correcting dysfunction, and getting multiple muscle groups to work together properly, five high-quality reps are far more challenging and more productive. Additionally, Functional Patterns is not just about what happens during your workout. It is about how you live. Bart talks about how the workouts he used to do felt separate from the physical demands of his real life. He was not thinking about how the way he trained related to construction, carpentry, and everything else he needed to do each day. That has changed significantly for him, and it has helped him address longstanding pain, move more efficiently at work, and continue making progress. If you want results you need focused time working on corrective exercises. But lasting change happens when you carry those principles into everything you do. How do you stand at the gas pump? How do you wait in line at the grocery store? How do you position yourself while working, walking, and lifting? How do you communicate? Are you entertaining abstractions? Client Results (Larry, 56 y/o): Before photos: February 2024 After photos: May 2025 I’ve dealt with chronic low back pain since the early 1990s. In 2012, I herniated my L3-L4 and L4-L5 discs with 5mm herniations on the right side. For years, I struggled with constant pain, stiffness, and nerve symptoms that significantly limited my quality of life. Before starting Functional Patterns in February 2024, I had what felt like a constant knot in my right glute for nearly two years, along with nerve pain running down my right leg. Eventually, the pain also began affecting my left leg. Car rides longer than 45 minutes became extremely difficult, I couldn’t lift anything remotely heavy, and running or participating in sports was out of the question. The pain was always present — typically around a 3–4 daily, but flare-ups could reach a 6–7 or higher. At one point, I couldn’t even complete the drive from Austin to Houston due to the pain. After about two months of FP, most of the nerve pain was gone. Since then, the focus has been on retraining my body and muscles to function properly again. For the most part, I can now push myself relatively hard without fear of major flare-ups, and I’m able to handle demanding tasks around the house again. The improvements have been significant: • Posterior right hip and glute stiffness/nerve pain: from a 4–5 down to a 1–2 • Low back pain: from a 5–6 down to a 1–2 • Nerve pain: previously a 7–8 at its worst, now mostly gone or only a mild awareness • Upper thoracic spine mobility: dramatically improved • Knee pain: now hardly noticeable • Neck stiffness: significantly improved At 56 years old, I can confidently say my body feels worlds better than it did before starting FP.

I see too many people give up on themselves, whether it’s because of age or feeling intimidated by the work ahead. They settle for living in pain. They settle for relationships that don’t encourage each other to improve. They accept atrophy instead of fighting it. And then they look for quick fixes to make up for work they never did. This work isn’t easy. It can be frustrating when progress feels slow and there’s no immediate reward. But when people actually stick with it, and yes that means years, the payoff is massive. And the best part? The results don’t just fade. You establish a foundation and then you build on top of it. You develop a resiliency that doesn’t crumble at the first sign of stress. So don’t give up on yourself. Especially if you’re older. Too many people in their middle age and beyond believe it’s too late and that all they can do is cope. That’s not true. If you don’t believe it, look at @fp.evidence or scroll down this page. You’ll see people in later decades making real progress, even into their 90s. Keep going. Shoutout to some of my clients shown in this video, and everyone else putting in persistent, smart work. Thank you for not giving up.
