Our speaker will be John Kenneth Paranada, the inaugural Curator of Art and Climate Change at the @sainsburycentre , @uniofeastanglia and a researcher at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. ‘Curating Art and Climate Change: Case Studies from the the Sainsbury Centre’ This presentation explores curatorial approaches to the ecological crisis at the Sainsbury Centre. Drawing on recent exhibitions including A World of Water (2025), Toward the Weird Heart of Things (2024), and Sediment Spirit (2023), the talk examines how contemporary art and museums can engage climate change through exhibition-making, rethinking collections, and interdisciplinary research. When we celebrated the launch of @tesfayeurgessa ’s show Roots of Resilience, we were joined by @eatethio , a creative studio that celebrates Ethiopia through ritual, where food, coffee, and sound are honoured as cultural ceremony. Together, we hosted an Ethiopian coffee ceremony, a living ritual in which coffee, conversation, and welcome are shared. Originating in Ethiopia, widely recognised as the birthplace of coffee, the ceremony is a cultural practice of community and connection. Visitors were invited to taste, witness, and understand the profound significance of coffee-making as a moment of pause; an invitation to gather, to listen, and to be present. With an autumn 2025 exhibition season whose title bluntly asks Can We Stop Killing Each Other?, the Sainsbury Centre (UK) is confronting politically explosive issues of migration, displacement, human violence and ‘othering’ in the past and present – and asking how arts and culture can either foster empathy or fuel violence. 💡 #ICOMVoices is an editorial space on the ICOM website that allows #museum and heritage professionals and researchers to share their experiences and reflections. 👉 Read the full ICOM Voices at icom.museum and via the link in bio
