Kunstsilo is one of the most impressive museums we’ve visited — massive spaces, powerful Nordic art, and an experience that stays with you. Right now you can experience the exhibition ‘Pictures for a new world. Stories from the Tangen collection.’ Be sure to put @kunstsilo on your list if you’re visiting Norway! #helgianderlend #kunstsilo
Kunstsilo was awarded the prestigious @prixversailles Versailles World Title on Thursday December 4th!
The announcement was made at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris during the Prix Versailles award ceremony. Kunstsilo had been shortlisted as the only Nordic museum among seven candidates in the category World’s Most Beautiful Museums.
“It is an honour to receive this recognition on behalf of Kunstsilo,” says Maria Mediaas Jørstad, Director of Kunstsilo.
“We are proud to be highlighted among so many strong international projects. Being awarded the Prix Versailles World Title is a tremendous achievement! This recognition belongs to everyone who has made this journey possible,” Jørstad continues.
“Kunstsilo is the custodian of the Tangen Collection—the world’s largest collection of Nordic Modernism—and has become a powerhouse for art and cultural experiences. I would like to thank all our forward-thinking and courageous public and private contributors. Without their efforts, Kunstsilo would never have come to life.
My gratitude goes to the Ministry of Culture, Agder County, the City of Kristiansand and Cultiva for their commitment and long-term support. I would also like to extend special thanks to the AKO Foundation for their decisive and lasting support for Kunstsilo.
And finally, my thanks to the architects at Mestres Wåge Arquitectes, BAX and Mendoza Partida, as well as Scenario Interior Architects, who have transformed this historic building into a modern art museum for the 21st century.
This recognition inspires us to continue thinking boldly! We are proud to represent the values of Prix Versailles: social participation and interaction—quite literally by breaking down silos,” says Jørstad.
What does rebellion and optimism look like in art?
In our new exhibition "Rebellion and Optimism. Stories from The Tangen Collection", you’ll encounter artists who challenged materials, ideas and traditional notions of what art could be in the decades following the Second World War. Featuring around 150 works from The Tangen Collection, the exhibition explores a time marked by both unrest, experimentation and belief in the future.
In this film, you’ll meet several of the artists represented in the exhibition through works, stories and expressions that still feel strikingly relevant today.
Welcome to an exhibition about new ideas, new communities and art that dared to imagine something entirely new.

I dag fyller Kunstsilo to år! 🎉🎈
To år har gått.

Edvard Munch – Portraits has its final day on Sunday, 10 May. This week is therefore your last chance to experience the exhibition, either on your own or through guided tours at Kunstsilo.
Experience the exhibition that has received highly positive reviews, both nationally and internationally!
“It’s possible without a Scream!”
– Stefan Musil, Kronen Zeitung
“Remarkable odes to the people who influenced him.”
– Martin Robinson, The Standard
This week, you can join an evening guided tour on Wednesday and Thursday at 18:00, or a daytime guided tour on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 12:30. The tours offer a final opportunity to get up close to Munch’s portraits – and to the people, relationships and stories that shaped his artistic practice.
Here, you have the opportunity to experience a rare entry point into Munch’s artistic practice. Through portraits of family, friends and artists, we encounter Munch in a slightly different light than the one we may be used to – as an artist surrounded by close relationships, supporters and artistic networks across the Nordic countries and Europe. With energetic brushstrokes, bold colours and great variation in expression, he explored the portrait genre in his own distinctive way.
A big thank you to @nationalportraitgallery and AKO Foundation for the collaboration and generous support.
Welcome to experience Edvard Munch – Portraits one last time at Kunstsilo – either on your own or through one of this week’s guided tours.
