Our current show Out of the Depths continues Weds-Sat 11-4. Thanks to everyone who's visited so far. This week we are also very excited to be hosting two events again as part of the Norwich and Norfolk Festival @nnfest inc Sat 16th "From Deep Heritage to Contemporary Art - 'Seahenge' Revisited" in collaboration with @lynn.museum The two artists in this show take overlapping and intersecting approaches to a vast space of themes and timescales encompassing the geological, the human, the cultural and the personal and spontaneous. @franceskearneyartist piece 'Borrowed from the Sea; On loan to the Universe' is a collection of finds from the North Norfolk coast where she is based. She has chosen to make explicit in the presentation of the pieces the multiple timescales which meet in each object -- we see that these echinoid fossils are 70 million years old, but they were also found by one of Frances's recent ancestors around 100 years ago, and now hold a significance in her own life story, her work and beyond. For @george_nuku also, different kinds of time are intimately interconnected, with the past ever-present. His work 'Seahenge Axis Mundi' using found wood and plastic treated as a precious resource expresses his deep affinity for the inter-relationships between past and future, new and ancient artworks and a shared global ancestry. Of Seahenge he says "Its spirit derives from a place where it feels like it has been done before, long ago…" Saturday's event promises a set of fascinating discussions around the current show. It begins with a chance to view the timbers of Seahenge itself at nearby Lynn Museum with archaeologist David Robertson who has worked extensively in Norfolk, then moving to the gallery with artists @george_nuku and @franceskearneyartist talking about their new works and the inspiration and resonances with Seahenge and other ancient finds in Norfolk. Note that tickets for Saturday are Sold Out. Contact @nnfest for any enquiries about returns or waitlist. And on Thursday we join author @ben_tufnell offsite nearby at @studio.baum in conversation with Tracee Findlater. Ticket links in our bio or @nnfest

Circles spirals and shadows - images and reflections from exhibits currently at GroundWork. Each one has either a memory or significant association or spiritual context. Artists George.Nuku and Frances Kearney have brought us some strong works full of deep and peaceful meaning - much needed in these fragile and often hostile times @george_nuku @franceskearneyartist @norfolkcontemporaryartsociety @nnfest #spiral #shadows #circles #peace #maori @newzealandhouse @contemporaryartsociety

Two for the price of one and four for the price of one… !! What can this mean?? It istwo writers in conversation about two books and four organisations collaborating to organise it! So - come to hear Ben Tufnell talking with fellow writer Tracee Findlater about his new book Paradise with a glancing reference to his first book The North Shore. Both books are highly atmospheric, dark, and full of mystery and strangeness. Paradise has been described as ‘an impressive…..eco-noir thriller’ combining an immersive reading experience ‘with an oblique exploration of late capitalism and climate change’ Tracee Findlater’s work ranges from meditations on memories in abandoned places right through to bittersweet romance with its own mysteries. The four organisations are GroundWork Gallery & King’s Lynn Book Festival as co local promoters, under the aegis of Norfolk & Norwich Festival through whom you need to book tickets £15 including refreshments The event will be held at the 4 th org - lovely new Studio Baum in King’s Lynn, Bridge street. The qr code in the poster might work for bookings, or try the link in the profile as it is on the GroundWork website @nnfest @kingslynnbookfestival @studio.baum @discoverkingslynn @writerscentre #writer #book #recentpublication @influxpress @littlebrownbookgroup_uk @ben_tufnell #traceefindlater ll

We are now entering the final few days to see this evocative exhibition in King’s Lynn showcasing ceramics and paintings. Painter Mary Blue’s work explores power and the fleeting nature of time, using light, shadow, and delicate subjects to reflect on impermanence, fragility, and meaning. Inspired by nature and moments of quiet connection, her paintings invite contemplation of life’s transience. Ceramic artist Caroline Chouler-Tissier examines personal and social trauma through her ceramic practice, drawing on rural landscapes and found materials. Her work embraces disruption, combining handbuilt forms, salvaged fragments, and expressive glazing to create emotionally charged pieces. C&C VIEWING ROOM - WOOLMARKET HOUSE 6 ST NICHOLAS STREET, KING'S LYNN PE30 1LY OPEN Wednesday to Friday 11am to 4pm Saturdays: 11am to 2pm and at other times by appointment MORE:contemporaryandcountry.com/ - #contemporaryandcountry #maryblue #carolinechoulertissier #kingslynn #woolmarkethouse

E-Co-Stitch for Earth Day. We are back sewing on (some) Wednesdays. Join us tomorrow for an Earth Day stitch with Sally-Ann. The theme of Earth Day is ‘Our Power Our Planet’ but who says that stitching is not a power? Of course as a skill which is all about bringing resources together with economy and ingenuity - saving waste, making beautiful things from almost nothing - it is a power and brings power to our community of makers and doers. So join us round the kitchen table from 2-4 on 22April. Free but donations welcome and we provide lots of stitch materials for you. @sallyannparker @thefentshop @discoverkingslynn @love_west_norfolk @earthdayofficial @earthdaynetwork

Really moved today looking in more detail at some of Frances Kearney’s special treasures. As part of Out of the Depths there is a whole display case showing what is in effect an autobiography in objects she has found over a lifetime living by the sea on the north Norfolk coast. What we see here is a collection of dear little dried frogs - something so poignant about their arrangement gathering around each other. And on next screen is a most beautiful collection of moles feet in a lovely precious pot. They were left on the artist’s doorstep by a local mole catcher - according to folk lore carrying one protects against cramps. These beautiful remains from nature carry all kinds of stories, memories and rituals. People visiting have been very inspired. Thank you Frances! @franceskearneyartist @nukugeorge @norfolkcontemporaryartsociety @nnfest @bcklwn @aceagrams

Invigilating at Groundwork today — doors open until 4. Frances Kearney’s friend-finds — bones, coastal fragments, plastic nurdles and detritus gathered over fifty years — are displayed with a kind of wonder that makes the intimate feel monumental. Among them, nurdles from the Solong Immaculate collision in the North Sea, March 2025 — toxic detritus treated with the same reverence as 70-million-year-old echinoids. Alongside, George Nuku’s Seahenge Axis Mundi brings plastic into conversation with deep time and the sacred — a Plexiglass echo of the original timber circle, now housed just up the road at Lynn Museum. Both are worth your time. #artandenvironment #franceskearneyartist #georgenuku

Here is Councillor Michael de Whalley posing in the middle of Beuys’ Acorns at the edge of the town. He was instrumental in finding the funding and the permissions and generally making it happen. This means that we now have Ackroyd & Harvey’s significant work of art just by King’s Lynn but also that this land is protected for ever as part of a town green and next to a community orchard. Michael’s picture is being taken by Myka Baum of the new @studio.baum and is one of our residency partners. This is all in aid of Michael’s candidacy as a new Independent Councillor for the Borough of King’s Lynn. Also Happy anniversary to Gustav Metzger former town resident, who would have loved this project @contemporary_and_country @ackroydharvey @culturedeclares @bcklwn @hardingspits @remembernaturemetzger @hauserwirth

Really enjoyed visiting a lovely new place this weekend in Gt Yarmouth. Many congratulations to Pete & Moira Huggins for opening South Quay Gallery & Learning Centre with fabulous works from their own collection - a couple of my favourites here - Wyndham Lewis lithograph portrait 1932 and a couple of works by my dear late friend Ian Tyson (oops sorry terrible pics of those). They have a really full programme planned for the rest of the year. All success to them. @southquaygallery @norfolkcontemporaryartsociety @eafestivaluk @trevorburgesspaintings @eastangliaartfund #gtyarmouth #artgalleryopening
