The Cal Poly College of Engineering (CENG) is where ideas become prototypes, classrooms become laboratories, and students become problem-solvers from day one. Through Learn by Doing, students aren’t just studying engineering and computer science, they’re building, testing, designing and innovating solutions that extend far beyond campus. From late nights in the lab to hands-on collaboration across disciplines, this is what engineering at Cal Poly looks like. ⚙️💡 1️⃣ Team members and volunteers apply a specialty mix of lightweight concrete to a nearly 20-foot-long canoe mold during the Cal Poly Concrete Canoe Team’s fall practice casting. 2️⃣ Students work on side panel integration for a CubeSat inside the clean room, where precision and teamwork are essential to every stage of development. 3️⃣ Members of Cal Poly Racing put in late nights on campus preparing their vehicles for upcoming competitions and race weekends. 4️⃣ Students use an anechoic chamber to tune the mZ circuit board’s dipole antenna on a CubeSat, simulating a space-like environment free from outside interference and reflections. 5️⃣ Members of Cal Poly Racing test their BAJA SAE vehicle at their course near Cuesta College, pushing performance and durability in real-world conditions. 6️⃣ Students in aerospace engineering gain hands-on experience learning the ins and outs of one of Cal Poly’s aircraft.

Over the past year, our team has been working hard to bring both our Battery Electric Prototype and our new Battery Electric Urban Concept to the #ShellEcoMarathon at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This year marked several exciting milestones for our club, including bringing two vehicles to competition for the first time and sending a record 17 members to represent our team. During our time in Indianapolis, we were also invited to tour the Chip Ganassi Racing machine shop and engineering offices. This was an incredible experience that gave our team a firsthand look at high-performance engineering in action. Moments like these reflect not only how far we’ve come, but also where we’re headed. With growing membership, ambitious projects, and a shared passion for innovation, the future of our club is brighter than ever. #Engineering #Sustainability #Innovation #StudentEngineering #Motorsports

This spring, Cal Poly computing students are studying and living in Granada, Spain. Part of Cal Poly’s Global Program, the experience integrates computing with culture by using the city as a classroom. Students explore real-world networks such as transportation, migration, language, and global systems while taking courses taught by Cal Poly faculty. Weekly excursions and field-based learning bring these concepts to life in a meaningful and applied way. Beyond academics, students are building community and gaining firsthand exposure to Spain’s history and daily life, from the Albaicín to local markets and neighborhoods throughout Granada. With support from the Noyce School of Applied Computing, this program expands access to immersive international experiences that strengthen both technical knowledge and global perspective. #CalPoly #StudyAbroad #GlobalEducation #AppliedComputing #ComputerScience #NoyceSchool #LearnByDoing #InternationalEducation #STEMEducation #StudentExperience #GranadaSpain #HigherEducation #GlobalLearning #TechEducation

Rethinking how we use AI. We had the opportunity to hear from Hadley Wickham, a leader in the data science space, on the evolving role of AI in programming and problem-solving. From comparing frontier models to exploring how LLMs are reshaping development workflows, the talk highlighted a key idea: it’s not about relying on one tool, but learning how to work across many. Wickham emphasized that the real power of AI comes from going beyond simple chat interfaces and integrating models directly into coding environments, creating feedback loops, and using them to build, test, and iterate faster. From turning raw data into structured datasets to enhancing productivity inside IDEs, AI is transforming how we approach data science and software development. His advice: Stay adaptable, build real projects, and focus on solving problems that matter. #noyceschool #calpolyslo #polyengineering #hadleywickham

In the early hours of March 30, Cal Poly students gathered along the coast in Lompoc, watching a SpaceX livestream as they waited in the fog. At 4:02 a.m., the sky lit up. The glow came first, bright enough to cut through the clouds. Then came the sound. A moment later, a Falcon 9 carrying SAL-E—a student-built CubeSat—rose into orbit. Getting the satellite to space was only part of the challenge. A few hours later, the first signal was picked up by an amateur radio operator in Australia, confirming that SAL-E was transmitting. By that afternoon, students established contact through Cal Poly’s ground station and began monitoring the spacecraft’s health during brief, three-minute passes over California. Now, weeks into the mission, students continue to track SAL-E around the clock—collecting data, managing operations, and preparing its onboard computing and communications payloads. At the Noyce School of Applied Computing, this is what applied systems work looks like: not just building technology, but following it all the way to orbit—and listening for it to come back. #CalPoly #LearnByDoing #AppliedComputing #CubeSat #PolySat

Happy Friday Mustangs 💚🐎 Meet Mustang Sarah Kula, a Interdisciplinary Studies major! We are so excited to celebrate one of our very own @polyengineering student researchers who has been selected to represent @calpoly at the 2026 CSU Student Research Competition this 4/23 to 4/25 at @sjsu , going up against the other 22 @thecsu campuses for her creative and outstanding achievements in research and scholarship. Yen Nguyen is an Electrical Engineering student in the College of Engineering pushing the boundaries of wireless communication, designing antenna systems that can send and receive signals simultaneously, potentially making cellular networks dramatically faster. Mentored by Dr. Payam Nayeri, Yen has already turned this research into multiple IEEE conference publications and international presentations, proving that cutting-edge engineering starts right here at Cal Poly. “ My work has allowed me to travel to other countries to present my work: Portland Oregon, Florence Italy, Ottawa Canada, and Detroit Michigan” – Nyugen ✈️ Need application help or support? Visit the Student Research Hub in Bldg. 38, Room 101 or book an advising appointment through our Notion link in bio! 💚
