We are so excited to celebrate one of our very own @polyengineering student researchers who has been selected to represent @calpoly at the 2026 CSU Student Research Competition this 4/23 to 4/25 at @sjsu , going up against the other 22 @thecsu campuses for her creative and outstanding achievements in research and scholarship.
Yen Nguyen is an Electrical Engineering student in the College of Engineering pushing the boundaries of wireless communication, designing antenna systems that can send and receive signals simultaneously, potentially making cellular networks dramatically faster. Mentored by Dr. Payam Nayeri, Yen has already turned this research into multiple IEEE conference publications and international presentations, proving that cutting-edge engineering starts right here at Cal Poly.

We are so excited to celebrate one of our very own @calpoly_baileycollege student researchers who has been selected to represent @calpoly at the 2026 CSU Student Research Competition this 4/23 to 4/25 at @sjsu , going up against the other 22 @thecsu campuses for her creative and outstanding achievements in research and scholarship.
Lizzie Manis is a Microbiology student in the Bailey College of Science and Math investigating how white blood cells communicate during infection, with the hope of unlocking new therapeutic targets for sepsis patients. Working alongside teammates Gabriella Richardson and Sophia Arias under the mentorship of Dr. Mallary Greenlee-Wacker, Lizzie is as passionate about making science accessible to everyone as she is about the research itself.

Daniel Hopkins is an Industrial Engineering student in the College of Engineering using mobile phone data to model how people access pharmacies, with the goal of improving healthcare facility placement for the communities that need it most. Mentored by Dr. Zhiyuan Wei, Daniel is combining data-driven research with a deep commitment to health equity and human mobility patterns.

Ethan Barnes is a History student in the College of Liberal Arts whose interdisciplinary curiosity led him to investigate the hydric physiology of Mojave Desert lizards, contributing to findings that reveal just how remarkably water-resistant these desert dwellers truly are. Under the mentorship of Dr. Emily Taylor and Dr. Trevor Ruiz, Ethan gained hands-on experience in collaborative scientific research and is now setting his sights on graduate study in Biology.

Sarah Kula is an Interdisciplinary Studies student in the College of Liberal Arts whose research critically examines how racial narratives are embedded in children's media, using My Little Pony: The Movie (2017) to unpack how white savior tropes can quietly shape the way young audiences see the world. Mentored by Dr. Emily Ryalls, Sarah's work makes a compelling case that children's media deserves the same rigorous critical lens we apply to adult content.

Taylor Hibino is an M.S. Agriculture (Plant Protection Science) student researching how the strategic timing of beneficial insect releases can protect organic strawberries from spider mites, finding that getting ahead of the problem makes all the difference. Under the mentorship of Dr. Mohammad Amir Aghaee, Taylor is turning her passion for sustainable pest management into research that supports healthier crops and more resilient farming practices.
