At Cal Poly, engineering students and faculty are working to launch a student chapter connected to the North American Society for Trenchless Technology, helping more students discover a field many have never heard of but may want to join.

Cal Poly mechanical engineering student Grace Murphy was recently awarded a scholarship from ACEC California.
Focused on a future in HVAC design, she gained experience with PAE Consulting Engineers and will join Burns & McDonnell. She also passed her FE exam in mechanical engineering and is preparing to pursue her PE.
On campus, she’s involved in Engineers Without Borders, the Society of Women Engineers and ASHRAE, where she’ll serve as student branch president.

Congratulations to this year’s Change the World: The Systems Thinking Challenge winners! Ashley Aring, Gabriel Ribeiro, Hannah Benson and Monish Shanmugham Suresh earned first place and a $5,000 prize for their idea VitaLines.
Cal Poly’s Human Powered Vehicle Team is featured in Travel Nevada magazine.
Mechanical engineering students Max La Via, Nathan Walker and Dylan Hyde are highlighted following last year’s World Human Powered Speed Challenge, where the team reached 50.08 mph, its fastest speed since before the pandemic.

A shout-out to AngelCon 2026 finalists Everest Medical Solutions and SafePlate Technologies, two teams with Cal Poly engineering graduates involved.
Hosted by Cal Poly CIE’s Small Business Development Center, AngelCon featured six startups from across Central California competing for $100,000+ in equity-backed funding.
Everest Medical Solutions pitched a minimally invasive device designed to address shoulder dystocia, a critical childbirth complication. SafePlate Technologies presented a rapid contaminant testing device for food manufacturing facilities focused on improving quality control.

More than 150 graduates were celebrated at the Cal Poly Maritime Academy Class of 2026 commencement on May 2.
The class included 22 mechanical engineering graduates, adding to the next generation of engineers launching their careers.
As the final graduating class before full integration with Cal Poly, these students carry forward a legacy of hands-on experience gained at sea, in labs and in the field.
