Thank you to everyone who joined us for an unforgettable opening night of Perennial, the first in a new series of annual exhibitions at Haarlem Artspace, celebrating the breadth and vitality of artistic practice rooted in and connected to Wirksworth and the wider region.
Bringing together artists living and working locally with others from across the UK who are seeking to form creative links with this unique rural setting, Perennial reflects Haarlem Artspace’s commitment to nurturing a thriving and supportive community of contemporary practitioners and marks not only the beginning of an ongoing exhibition tradition, but also the kind of sustainable, long-term thinking that underpins our approach to programming, collaboration, and meaningful support for artists — through space, opportunity, and community.

NECROLOGY: Becoming Soil with Rosalie Bak 2025. Workshop: paper/fabric, bokashi ink, audio recording
@rosaliebak@haarlemartspace
In Becoming Soil, which accompanied the exhibition NECROLOGY, participants were led through a series of somatic exercises unfolding in three parts: ‘Noticing, ‘Being with/in’, and ‘Fermenting’. Drawing on principles from the field of Haptonomy (the practice and study of human relationality and the phenomena of touch) participants were invited to make way for a more sensorial encounter with body, soil and death-care. Together, they moved trough the exhibition space and grounds of St Mary’s Cemetery connecting with our temporal, fleshly and microbial matters. Participants were guided by an audio-recording and site specific mediation and, at the close of the workshop, gathered collectively to produce a responsive work using ink made from the ferments of decomposing organic matter.

Join us on Friday 20 June for the opening of Perennial, the first in a new series of annual exhibitions at Haarlem Artspace, celebrating the breadth and vitality of artistic practice rooted in and connected to Wirksworth and the wider region.
Bringing together artists living and working locally with others from across the UK who are seeking to form creative links with this unique rural setting, Perennial reflects Haarlem Artspace’s commitment to nurturing a thriving and supportive community of contemporary practitioners — both emerging and established.
The exhibition’s title evokes ideas of return, resilience, and slow growth — of cycles that repeat and renew. In this spirit, Perennial marks not only the beginning of an ongoing exhibition tradition, but also the kind of sustainable, long-term thinking that underpins our approach to programming, collaboration, and meaningful support for artists — through space, opportunity, and community.
We open Perennial with a celebration at the gallery on Friday 20 June. Grab a drink downstairs at The Feather Star and join us upstairs in the gallery for an evening of art, conversation, and celebration as we launch this new annual exhibition series.
