Track Of The Day “The Emergence” @jononabowu
Wow.
From the intro to the end, what we have here is an instrumental track that fuses futuristic jazz sensibilities with leanings towards chords you can only have learned in church. Shout out Aaron Lindsey, Tom Brooks and those uncles that guided us through those hours of rehearsals.
Anyway, the synth lead and guitars take us on a journey that causes you to want to stop and listen all over again in that it starts off on a long straight stretch of road where the engine of the track revs - it hits the mark and then it launches getting louder to a big finish.
Roads? We don’t need roads.
In fact there is no Rhodes on this track.
If you know you know.
This track features another artist who’s been part of the track of the day this year - Mr. DM from Blue Lab Beats.
Jon is a London-based drummer, composer, and bandleader whose work centres on high-energy live performance, deep groove, and collective improvisation. His contemporary jazz project is driven by feel, intensity and musical conversation, shaped in real time on stage.#trackoftheday #newmusic #musicblog #instamusic #musiciansofinstagram
Throwback Track Of The Day “Fastlove Pt. 1 @georgemofficial
On 4th May 1996 this song was George Michael’s 7th UK no. 1 starting a three week run at the top of the chart and it was the second of six tracks taken from his Older album.
First of all I can’t believe it’s 30 years since this track went to No.1. It’s wild to think how quickly time can pass. This track still has that slick production associated with Older, the album from which this track comes from, a really mature sound, George’s vocals sitting right there, and the genius use of Forget Me Nots by Patrice Rushen for the outro just makes this even more special. I know there were blood sweat and tears to make this happen, and my hats off to @anorthernsoul70 for pulling it off.
The story about how Johnny came to work on the Older album is a good un by the way. Definitely one of my favourite producer/artist stories and it was fruitful as evidenced here.
You’ve got synths pulsing, a horn section, an overall futuristic sound that has a vintage edge, and seems to cross decades in its approach. I remember back in 1996 this was in constant rotation on MTV - it was also a good summer!
