Pitara Co & @pilascafeny brought together Latin American & South Asian communities at The World’s Borough Bookshop for an afternoon of heart-opening cultural exchange, celebration & mouth-watering fusion (you’ll see what we mean!) Did you know that India has a historic coffee culture completed with its own brewing method and signature drink? Say hi to kaapi (kah-pee), the most iconic beverage of South India and truly the soul of South Indian mornings. Kaapi is the drink of choice all over South India— including in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, & Kerala, the luscious, green states from where we source our coffee. Our Kaapi blend follows the traditional formula*: a blend of Arabica & Robusta beans with a hint (20%) of chicory. We invite you to try Kaapi today @ pitaraco.com * Any rich culinary tradition has hundreds of variations of any recipe. While the core of Kaapi typically involves coffee brewed with chicory in a traditional filter, variations come from how it’s prepared and flavored. This reel was made by @ananyasayekumar - Ananya is a South Asian film student at Syracuse. The world isn’t ready for the storytelling that is about to unfold!!! 🤍 Follow for more :))) . . . . . #kaapi #coffeeculture #cafe #southasian #india #learnaboutcoffee #southindian #representation

South Asia isn’t one story—it’s many, deeply interwoven ones. And Pitara is for all of them. 💛 Though we’re Indian, our family’s story—like so many others—crosses borders. Our grandparents were born in what’s now Pakistan and migrated during Partition in 1947, when British-drawn lines split Punjab in two. That history lives in us. And it reminds us that South Asian heritage, culture, and traditions are—and have always been—shared across borders. In our mission to tell the stories behind each product responsibly, with the context and care that helps people feel seen and nurtured, we realized: the story is only complete when we include all of South Asia. 🇮🇳 India | 🇵🇰 Pakistan | 🇧🇩 Bangladesh | 🇳🇵 Nepal | 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka . . . . . #desi #appropriation vs #culturalappreciation #southasian #smallbusiness #familybusiness #representationmatters #hindi #punjabi #india #pakistan #nepal #srilanka #bangladesh

Many don’t know India is the 7th-largest producer of coffee in the world, with its own historic coffee culture, brewing tools, and signature drink: filter kaapi ☕️ Join us for an afternoon of coffee tasting featuring beans from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, ethically sourced from smallholder farms and fair-trade collectives across South India. We’ll be brewing everything using a traditional South Indian filter, the same brewing method that’s been part of daily ritual and community for generations (ask your South Indian friends if they have one!) 📍 Myrtle Wombat 581 Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205 - NYC 🗓 May 16 | 11–2 PM (Partiful link in bio!) ✨ Free coffee samples ✨ Free mini latte with any $10 purchase in-store Myrtle Wombat is an AAPI-owned specialty grocer and safe haven for minority- and woman-owned brands, and we’re so appreciative that they’ve shared their space with us 🤎 #aapiheritagemonth #aapihm #aapifoodiefam #aapiwomenlead #aapi

This Sunday @pitaraco will be joining us at @bonstudionyc this Sunday for our Culinary Creatives Collective event :) Pitara Co is a multi-generational, family-founded coffee company, led by Kanchana and her daughters Aditi and Alisha. Sourcing beans from lush nature reserves in South India, they work directly with farmer collectives made up primarily of marginalized indigenous communities, including Soliga, Kurumba, and Irula growers. Farmers are paid a minimum of 1.2x the market rate for their crop, a meaningful premium in the coffee supply chain that supports more equitable pay for indigenous growers. @pitaraco will be serving Fitler Kaapi, a traditional South Indian filter coffee, originating from India’s longstanding coffee drinking culture that began in the 17th century. The legend is that a Sufi saint named Baba Budan brought the first beans to South India. Those beans took to India’s soil, soaking up the unique flavors of the land such as cardamom, and just like that, Kaapi was born. Filter Kaapi is a blend of arabica and robusta beans with a hint of chicory, and enjoyed across Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, the lush states from which they source their coffee beans.
