As @kulku_band arrive in the UK this weekend, the next release on Phase Group lands just in time for their second tour of the island.
A special limited-run lathe cut 7” for you here, featuring the solo material of Kulku’s compelling frontman, Wenzlovar.
With ‘You Declared the War/She’s Born’, Andreas Riska shares material recorded at his home studio in Berlin during down time from the intriguing No-Age collective’s activities.
Listeners familiar with Kulku’s work will hear the parallels, albeit in a more personal sphere. On ‘You Declared the War’, Wenzlovar laments the greed and destruction of war amongst rolling bass, drum rhythms and bluesy guitar work, with the track rising to an intense crescendo of vocal cries and sirens.
On ‘She’s Born’, guitar and cello sit calmly over organ drum patterns as Wenzlovar recounts a surrealist tale, sounding something like Loaded-era Velvets flirting with the lap-steel.
Lathe cut 7” available in an edition of 50, with a printed, double-sided insert.
Head to our SoundCloud to hear previews. Preorder available now via bandcamp and advance copies available at all of Kulku’s gigs in the UK this week.

Kulku embodies an exhilarating Happening, a profound ceremony of raw music. Organic, driven, grounded yet floating. Kulku was founded by Johanna Riska and Andreas Riska alias Wenzlovar. The roots of their music grew out of influences from early minimal music (Moondog, Steve Reich), ritual music and art rock legends of the 60s. In the tradition of German Krautrock bands such as Can and Faust, the band is characterized by a sound whose raw material is made up of Orff instruments. With this special collection of instruments: metallophone, drums, orchestral timpani, xylophone, clarinet, saxophone, cello and an assortment of self-made instruments a universe of metaphysical stories is created. Stories about enlightened dogs or lost visionaries in the urban jungle full of light and shadows. An acoustic perpetuum-mobile that is fed by concentrated absorption. Exploring the sound spectrum of wood, metal and the human voice. Kulku calls their music No Age, a mix of un- kitsch spirituality and the raw energy of punk/no wave.
Our next Phase Group mix comes from Bristol’s own, @junior___ricketts .
A Noods affiliate and master chef, his Phase Group mix is a homage to his rediscovering of different style of DJing, the simple art of play and pause. Taking us on a ride through various styles and sounds, Junior leads us from cavernous rhythms and drones, drawing the line between that and playful rock and post-punk adjacent funk, wave and insistent dub-inspired musics of various kinds.
It’s best to just press play here.

The Phase Group Mix continues into a new year with an offering from the UK’s North East, courtesy of @cornbilljon . Jon lives in Newcastle where he oversees the programming of @thelubberfiend , a venue that in the two and a half years since it opened has become a beacon for underground and experimental music in the UK and a hub for the music scene in Tyneside. To say he’s one of the hardest working guys doing it would be totally fair, as on top of booking the program, Jon manages @slacksradio , a community station dedicated to the local scene and can also be found regularly DJing in the venue and others around the UK . When we met him he was covered in dust, having just installed the plumbing for the now newly opened Lubber Kitchen. Somewhere between all the booking, admin, DJing, DIY and community work, Jon found time to record us this mix - a mind-bending 80 minute journey through the kind of downtempo, dub infused, minimal synth, acid and slow trance sound that he’s mastered playing countless warm-up sets in the Lubber.
Thanks Jon!

Phuong Dan has spent two decades at the cutting edge of the electronic music scene in Europe, hosting and curating the legendary Gatto Musculoso nights at Hamburg’s Golden Pudel club. As a DJ he’s known for his ability to blend sounds from experimental and avant-garde electronic music to contemporary underground techno through dub, post punk, disco, house and rave in sets which show little adherence to conventions and genre. This rare London appearance of Dan’s in the unique setting of Spanners for Phase Group and Sagome this Saturday is sure to be one not to miss.
Joining him on the night is Lizzie Urquhart, another DJ with a talent for connecting the dots between a wide range of sounds and co-head of the wonderful Somewhere Press label.
Nice Strangers is a radio producer, record selector and half of the team behind Sagome, a London-based record label and event series known for pushing the envelop of electronic and experimental live sound.
And MR TC is a versatile DJ producer of electronic music with releases on Optimo, Offen, Neubau and his own Phase Group, an imprint dedicated to forward-thinking electronic music that he co-runs with Lo Kindre.
