Valentina Magaletti is a queer drummer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist who treats percussion as a political and poetic instrument—an unruly body that refuses straight lines, fixed identities, and normative rhythms. Her work dismantles the boundaries between noise, ritual, and music, transforming ceramics, found objects, and skin-based textures into tools for resistance and queer world-building. PS. It’s also the first book to be published by Permanent Draft, an all-female record label and micro-press founded by Chiarello & musician Valentina Magaletti, dedicated to promoting contemporary female, non-binary and transgender artists. Basta Now is essentially a huge (yet admittedly not definitive) overview of finta* in the global experimental sound & music scene. TONIGHT: VALENTINA MAGALETTI - THREE-DAY RESIDENCY - DAY THREE: 8 MARCH XEXA (SOLO) + XEXA / VALENTINA MAGALETTI (DUO) + DAMSEL ELYSIUM / VALENTINA MAGALETTI (DUO) + KAREN WILLEMS (SOLO) + AUDE VAN WYLLER & LUCY VAN - ALBUM RELEASE The portal closes. The final night of Valentina Magaletti’s 2026 residency threads through solo practice, duo intimacy, and collaborative communion. Karen Willems opens the evening. From the child with the marching drum grew an unconventional percussionist whose expressive technique has taken her through Yuko, Zita Swoon Group, Mauro, & Zwerm. With her project Inwolves she took steps towards discovering the essence of her own music - finding herself as both spiritual being and creative artist. “We need smaller, more intimate moments together. Far from the industry, close to the essence of music.” Jazz as communicative form seeking dialog, moving along the borderline of improvised and experimental music. Damsel Elysium joins Valentina next. Damsel Eysium’s practice crosses experimental sound art with avant-pop, performance art with contemporary classical - an alchemist of body, space, object and the metaphysical. Their work explores anticolonial and neurodivergent practice. Working with improvisation, somatic techniques, subtle energy, and ancestral knowledge, they architect hypnagogic activation to initiate alternative realities, making the stage an altar. XEXA appears twice - first solo, then closing in duo with Valentina. A composer, vocalist and sound artist of São Tomé e Príncipe ancestry based in London via Lisbon. Her new album ‘Kissom’ - on Príncipe is a brilliant, unexpected tilt into writhing, syrupy kizomba rhythms and smudged, vaulted chamber music - a voice that moves between worlds closing the residency where it began: in rhythm and transformation. The night will feature Aude van Wyller & Lucy Van’s LP release - exploring how to picture listening in a sound piece, how to reproduce a space and point of hearing in music. Proceeds go to ACT UP. Aude Van Wyller & Lucy Van - MATERIAL Permanent Draft, 2026 Disorientingly transitive example of sound poem experimentation from Oi Les Ox’s Aude Van Wyller and Lucy Van, a former associate of Laila Sakini on that similarly great Figures LP from nearly 10 (!) years ago. MATERIAL presents as a true product of collaboration, Van Wyller’s fragmented production, built from fractured loops and palimpsestic field recordings, the ideal frame for Van’s text, which seems to explore interconnected thoughts around urban space, dissolving time and the human subject amidst it. Such pursuits can frequently translate as overly academic, solipsistic or abstruse to the point of incomprehension, but that’s far from the case here, with something mysteriously inviting about their pairing, a confluence of unexpected melody and strange observation emergent from the intistial ooze that proves both alien and somehow warm. This is the music of the vibrating city and how we move alongside it. Highly recommended for anyone who’s found worth in M. Klein & Steffan de Turck’s A New City, The Dengie Hundred’s work with Gemma Blackshaw or Hiele Kinsella’sThird Summer of Love. Edition of 200 w/ beautiful embossed sleeve & 56 page photo book.
