Announcing Grogmates 酒友: a Shanghai-based importer collective from @hamishwilliams97 and @lickydan 12 months ago in Shanghai I noticed that whilst there was a lot of good wine available in the city, independent Victorian-made wine was scarce. Armed with hopeless optimism and “a concept of a plan” I had the idea to work with Victorian-based winemaker-friends and bring their wine to Shanghai-based wine buyer-friends. I stupidly underestimated how difficult this was. But we’ve done it! It only gets easier from here. Grogmates 酒友 is starting small: two cuvees from @bandicoot_run and @weingut_ale are now available China-wide. With this, we hope to build deeper connections between Melbourne and Shanghai’s food and wine community. Just as I have been sharing Chinese wines with Australia’s wine industry, I am now so excited to do it the other way around (plus, it’s another reason for me to keep going back!) If you know anyone in China who would like to buy these wines, please get in touch! Grogmates 酒友 out x

If you consider yourself a bit of a wine snob, you’re probably used to studying the origins of a bottle before ordering—whether it’s on a restaurant wine list or the shelves of your local bottle-o. France, Italy, Spain and regional Australia tend to dominate the conversation, shaping the backbone of most wine lists across the country. Entire wine cultures exist beyond those familiar regions but they rarely make it into Australian glasses, and Aussie-based sommelier and importer Hamish Williams is trying to change that. Through his label @peripherywines , Hamish is introducing Australian drinkers to Chinese wines—an emerging category he believes deserves a place alongside the world’s most established wine regions. Hit the link in the bio for the full feature, written by Eloise Luke. [ID: workers harvest and sort dark grapes into blue crates in a vineyard, capturing the hands-on process behind winemaking.
