A journey through 125 years of Black British music, from early 20th century foundations to jazz, lovers rock, jungle, grime and beyond — not just as sound, but as history, identity and resistance.
Because this story isn’t just something to look back on. It’s still being written.
As Exhibition Research Assistant Josephine Small puts it: “Music is a product of society… not just of the person making it, but everyone who came before.”

I’ve just had the most life-changing musical experience of my life. Picture this: 15 strangers in a beautiful manor house in Somerset, spending a week writing songs together. Under the incredible guidance of Chris Difford @chrisdifford@songwritersgarden we created and performed new material every day in small groups 🎸
I’m still in awe that someone believed in me enough to select me for this. To create alongside such talented and kind-hearted artists was SO inspiring. The quality of what we made together blew me away, I feel extremely privileged and uplifted! 🥰

The Road to Freedom team head to Cairo this weekend to distribute much needed aid and support to Sudanese and Palestinian communities. The horrors we are all seeing live on our screens continue to completely destabilise the lives of million of innocent people. Support, especially in this holy month, is so so needed.
All proceeds from this very special collaboration with @anzstyle are going towards supporting families, providing hot meals, long term food boxes, household and education needs as well as preparing to get aid inside Gaza as soon as the border re-open.
All children have dreams. It’s time we honour them to protect the future of our world. For Sudan, for Palestine and for all who are facing injustice across the globe.

All children have dreams. These are just a few of the hundreds we heard from the children of Sudan and Palestine. Dreams of hope, peace and better futures in the midst of the ongoing daily turmoil they face.
