Climate change is not waiting.
At the April 28th MSC meeting, our own @cccannady said what needed to be said. @cityofpasadena declared a climate emergency in 2023. The plan exists. The pieces are there, including 20 megawatts of solar on city-owned properties and 50 megawatts of storage. What is missing is the funding to make it real.
“A vision without a plan is foolishness. A plan without funding is an illusion.”

Renovate… or tear it down?
With more than $850 million in Measure R bond funding on the table, PUSD is considering three options — including full demolition and reconstruction.
But here’s the truth:
The greenest building is almost always the one that already exists.
Adaptive reuse means:
🌎 Preserving embodied carbon
🌳 Protecting mature trees and neighborhood character
🔧 Upgrading seismic safety, HVAC, ADA access, and infrastructure
⚡ Adding solar + energy efficiency
⏳ Shorter construction timelines
💰 Smarter use of public dollars
Demolition is expensive.
It is carbon-intensive.
And once it is done, it can’t be undone.
Pasadena has already taken a step forward with its Adaptive Reuse Ordinance. Now we have a chance to align policy, capital, and climate responsibility — right here in our public schools.
Historic campuses are not obstacles.
They are assets.
Modernization can prepare San Rafael for the next century — without erasing the last one.

The myth of Cassandra is more than ancient Greek tragedy. It is the story of women whose warnings are accurate, whose urgency is real, and whose voices are dismissed until the flames arrive.
Cynthia Cannady, Chair of PASADENA 100, has been sounding the alarm for years: Pasadena Water and Power must reach 100% fossil-fuel-free energy by 2030. That deadline is not symbolic. It is a lifeline.
Ellen Snortland, a writer and Altadena resident, put it plainly this week after losing her home in the Eaton Fire: “The climate crisis is not coming. It already happened to us.”

Up to $550/kWh for battery storage. Income-qualified customers can receive $1.00/watt. Zero PWP plan review or inspection fees during the pilot.
This is our path to 100% carbon-free electricity by 2030. One rooftop at a time.

🌍 Today is Earth Day and we are still glowing from Saturday. @cityofpasadena ‘s FIRST Earth Day celebration since the pandemic, and @pasadena_100 was there with a booth, our volunteers, and our neighbors. Families came out, asked questions, and learned why clean and solar energy are not optional. They are survival.
Pasadena has declared a climate emergency. Our goal is 100% carbon-free energy by 2030. For the sake of our children and grandchildren, and for the quality of our lives right now, we need our City Council and PWP to make that goal a reality.

🌧️☔️ After keeping a close eye on the forecast, we’ve decided to move tomorrow’s Issue Forum indoors to our usual spot: Jefferson Auditorium (1500 E Villa St., right across from the park).
Our priority is making sure everyone can attend comfortably and safely — avoiding slippery park conditions. We’ll miss being outside (especially for a conversation centered on our environment), but Mother Nature had other plans this time — and we respect that.
