I had the greatest of times at the European premiere of 10s Across The Borders at the BFI flare film festival. So special to celebrate the film with dearest director Sze in London - the place we met and first collaborated in 2015! 🌻 And wonderful Yasmin joined us from Germany 😎 Great energy and vibes from the BFI flare team and audience, lots of heartfelt discussions that will stay with me. Sad not to have more of the cast and crew with us.. Very pleased to see The Fairy Moon having it's World premiere at Fantasia Festival. It's been a great creative journey - we recorded a beautiful choir for the soundtrack, then I used part of the recordings to create drones, stingers and subtle layers to immerse the audience in the unsettling sonic universe of the film. Lovely collaboration with Craig Williams and Julien Allen, they've been amazing. Great performance by James Swanton and Johnny Vivash - and voice of Julia Davis. #sounddesign #horror #fantasiafestival #shortfilm #worldpremier

PLS TURN SOUND ON FOR VIDEOS “Nowhere is safe: Tinnitus Sky” - Post 3/3 I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to create this piece of work and have it resonate alongside the works of the extraordinary artists Outi Pieski, Abbas Akhavan, Bruce Conner, Zheng Bo, Gauri Gill & Rajesh Vangad, Edgar Calel, Carolina Caycedo, Abbas Zahedi, and the curatorial team at the Tate who created this wonderful exhibition and Gathering Ground in which to hold such complexity. Thank you to @_davidbirkin and @max.houghton8 of Visible Justice, and all my fellow panelists in the Symposium - Radha D’Souza, @sunnahkhanpoet , @nadineelenany , and Imani Jacqueline Brown. Thank you also to @aurasatz for all forms of Preemptive Listening. The evening opened with Sunnah Khan’s poem Murmurations, which ends: “Let the starlings show you how motion is a movement made of many that a murmur is more than what is whispered that when we move together our breath becomes the wind disarming grave danger with the sound of our wings” I can think of no better way to describe the power and hope in our collective murmurations. - “Nowhere is safe: Tinnitus Sky” is 20min 25 seconds long, and is followed by 76 seconds of silence, each second commemorating the number of years since the Nakba. - For more information about the exhibition and artists please visit the Tate’s website. Video 1 features: ABBAS AKHAVAN, STUDY FOR A MONUMENT, and BRUCE CONNER, CROSSROADS Video 2 features: BRUCE CONNER, CROSSROADS, and ABBAS AKHAVAN, STUDY FOR A MONUMENT Video 3 features: CAROLINA CAYCEDO, YUMA, OR THE LAND OF FRIENDS II Video 4 features: ABBAS ZAHEDI, BEGIN AGAIN Video 5 features: OUTI PIESKI, GURŽOT JA GUOVSSAT SKÁBMAVUOĐĐU and ZHENG BO, PTERIDOPHILIA I Video 6 features: OUTI PIESKI, GURŽOT JA GUOVSSAT SKÁBMAVUOĐĐU Video 7 features: GAURI GILL & RAJESH VANGAD, THE EYE IN THE SKY Video 8 features: EDGAR CALEL, RU K’ OX K’OB’EL JUN OJER ETEMAB’EL (THE ECHO OF AN ANCIENT FORM OF KNOWLEDGE) and ABBAS ZAHEDI, BEGIN AGAIN Video 9 features: ABBAS ZAHEDI, BEGIN AGAIN

PLS TURN SOUND ON FOR VIDEOS “Nowhere is safe: Tinnitus Sky” - Post 2/3 Making this piece, I entered the hellscape of sound, and innovation in the world of drones, of which Israel is of course a world leader. Arms manufacturers’ promo videos demonstrate very clearly the technology that has been used in Gaza, and resulted in multiple cases of children killed by quadcopters armed with sniper rifles. Some part of me wishes I did not learn that the drones have also been playing the sound of babies and children crying to lure people out from refuge, thinking they will save a child, only to be shot themselves. But the violence is not always extraordinary in this way. As you see in the second video - the sound of the drones is so pervasive that children have been filmed in their music lessons learning Do Re Mi scales tuned to the sound of the drones hovering above them that are ‘hungering for their souls’. - The evening included several clear demands for Tate to divest from all forms of finance complicit in arms manufacturing and the building of illegal settlements. The arguments and information regarding this complicity are stated most clearly in the open letter to Tate signed by over 1000 artists, available online. One of the great achievements of Gathering Ground lies in the work of @liberatetate , whose successful campaign over six years, meant that this exhibition on ecological devastation could be brought to the public WITHOUT the sponsorship of BP. As you exit Gathering Ground there is a plaque that rightly celebrates Tate’s calling of a Climate Emergency in 2019, and details the sustainability objectives of the exhibition and building, from the use of lightbulbs, to the reuse of the carpet, and how the fruit and vegetables in the exhibition are composted. I hope those with the power to change things in the Tate, and indeed all public institutions, can see why we demand a world in which human bodies are accorded the same care as fruit and carpets in divesting from profits made from political violence, whether in Ukraine, Palestine, or elsewhere. May this exhibition and Gathering Ground be a harbinger of that better world, so clearly within reach.

PLS TURN SOUND ON FOR VIDEOS “Nowhere is safe: Tinnitus Sky” - Post 1/3 Yesterday, the sound of drones in Gaza was brought to the exhibition Gathering Ground at @tate . I was invited as part of a symposium titled “Hostile Environments - What happens to the land, happens to us” organised by @visiblejustice_ual , to create something between an intervention, response & performance that attuned to the exhibition, while connecting between it & the inspiring panel of talks that took place in the Starr Cinema. Gathering Ground is an exhibition that ‘explores threatened ecologies’, & ‘highlights the connection between environmental and social justice’. At the heart of the exhibition is an incredible work by @abbzah called Begin Again that is directly plugged into the pipes of the Tate, & listens to the resonances, both sonic and political, that reverberate in the building. At some level Gathering Ground & Begin Again helped me find the words to describe what I call my Political Tinnitus. I cannot unhear the genocide in Gaza wherever I am. I cannot unsee it. It puts everything in the world in relief for me. As I wandered around the exhibition, I yearned to hear it audible and acknowledged - and so I created this piece, in collaboration with the extraordinary sound designer @panosophy , made from extracts of drone sounds from videos filmed in Gaza. The persistent sound of drones in Gaza is one of the less reported acts of political violence that has accompanied the genocide. Even following the ceasefire, the sound has not stopped. In the words of Fatma Al Zahraa Sehwail, in her recent article- I dream of a quiet, drone free Gaza - A ceasefire has been declared, but the torment from the skies has not stopped: “During the genocide, the proximity & volume of the buzzing intensified, sending a clear message: The drones hungered for the souls of Gaza’s residents. For 15 months, the buzzing sound never stopped - day or night - these flying machines controlled where we went, what we did and who lived or died. It felt like the occupation had placed a surveillance camera over each living soul in Gaza. It felt like the drones outnumbered the birds in Gaza’s sky.”
