Winner of the New Visions prize at @cphdox , the beautiful PREEMPTIVE LISTENING by @aurasatz is out today on True Story! "a bold, sophisticated essay about the state of the world. Both disquieting and mesmerizing, filled with grandiose, troubling images and a wide variety of soundscapes...the film creates a hypnotic, often nightmarish atmosphere, but one that also suggests a utopian future" @thesensesofcinema #TrueStoryDOCS #TrueStory #Documentary #preemptivelistening @light.oracles

Aura Satz, Warnings in Waiting, 2024 A hundred years ago, the siren symbolised the absolute creative will of steel and steam. In 1922, Arsenij Avraamov’s Symphony of Sirens captured the sound sources of shipping, factory work, raw material extraction and war preparations with the help of a machine orchestra in the sound space of the industrial port of Baku, celebrating the ‘new man’ and the triumph of the industrial age. Sirens experienced another heyday during the Second World War and the Cold War, when they were used to warn of air raids and the threat of nuclear attack. But what do sirens signal today? They are used to warn of extreme weather, to initiate collective moments of remembrance, or to test disaster preparedness. They have become an instrument of acoustic control and crisis management. Aura Satz explores this theme in her installation Warnings in Waiting, which is part of her ongoing documentary film project Preemptive Listening. The life cycle of sirens is explored in three parts. Sirens are shown in their original context, embedded in landscapes and architecture, then there are sirens that are still in production, in a kind of limbo in the factory, and sirens in a state of obsolescence in a ‘siren graveyard’ or scrap yard. The siren itself is undergoing a profound change. In the face of alarm fatigue, noise pollution and the increasing inefficiency of public loudspeaker announcements, which are increasingly being replaced by text-based alerts on mobile phones, we have long since internalised the siren. It exists within us even before we hear it, keeping us in a state of constant alert. This is precisely where Aura Satz comes in: she replaces the ‘normal’ industrial siren sounds with contemporary pieces of music that nevertheless retain something siren-like, namely the mythological figure of the seductive but dangerous creature. Part of the état bruit exhibition. On display from 28.03 until 20.09.2026. 📷 Photos by @webskiphot

𝘍𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘦 by Aura Satz ( @aurasatz ) is a pair of lenticular prints depicting expanding bullets and crater-like bullet holes. The large circular prints are hung on parallel walls, facing each other, inviting the viewer to stand between them, as if in the path of the bullet that tore through. The work is currently featured in 𝑺𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒓𝒚, a group exhibition of 16 artists examining root causes and psychological effects of displacement. On view through March 7, 2026.  ————————— Aura Satz (b. 1974, Barcelona) is a London-based artist based who works with film, sound, performance and sculpture. Opening today in NY, dark times to be revisiting my piece ‘Flickering Between the Bullet and the Hole’ (2016). Also screening @preemptivelistening on the 11 Feb. Can’t stop thinking about the ICE whistles, powerful sounds of resistance, both of warning and solidarity. • @fridmangallery Fridman Gallery is honored to announce 𝙎𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙮, a group exhibition examining root causes and psychological effects of displacement. The exhibition title refers to “sanctuary cities”, including New York, which are supposed to afford legal protection for immigrants, and, in a more general sense, to sanctuaries as physical and emotional safe spaces. Immigrants and artists, channeling individual and collective experiences of trauma and healing, are messengers of powerful stories we can assimilate as our own. Sanctuary aims to create a space where a shared sense of displacement leads to shared empathy. ————————— 𝙎𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙮 January 28 – March 7, 2026 Opening reception: Wednesday, January 28, 2026, 6-8pm. *** Aura Satz’s «Preemptive Listening» shook us. It made us think about sound in moments of crisis and protest – about sirens as signals of fear, but also as a call to take responsibility and turn to people.  Sound chronicler Mohamed Yaghi listens tirelessly in «Gaza Sound Man». On Sunday, September 7, at 3 PM, mobile phones across the UK will vibrate and emit a test emergency siren sound for up to 10 seconds followed by a text message. As the text alert sounds this week we are thinking about other creative calls for synchronised remote listening, specifically composer Mieko Shiomi’s Spatial Poem N.7 from March 5, 1974 (excerpted in the first slide). With this instance of purposeful collective attention we mark the date and inaugurate our Scoring Warnings project. Together with scientists, artists, and curators from various institutions we will explore the relationships between artistic scores and the language, haptics, and communication styles of warnings to understand how these serve as tools for persuasion, mobilisation, and collaboration Project team: @francesca_l_cavallo @irene_revell @aurasatz , @uclwrc , @cjfearnley , @ilankelman , funded by AHRC #scoringwarnings #emergencyalert #testsiren #spatialpoem #testalert
