Based on a one-month residency in Tainan, Preparation for Departure explores latent daily crises. By juxtaposing the roar of fighter jets, moving vistas on the road to the airport, and the city’s ephemeral scenes, the exhibition builds a tension between routine and disaster, revealing how we navigate fear and the impulse to escape. The lecture performance Run Scared employs narrative intervention to interweave fighter jet patrols, emergency kits, and the security of memory. It examines how individuals undergo a psychological rehearsal—of both mind and body—to prepare for imminent disaster and migration in a turbulent world.

Lecture performance by Hou Lam Tsui and Wong Pak Hang Reaching This Point is the Limit 講述表演:去到呢到就係極限 Upcoming performance at Art Central (@artcentralhk ) 29 March, 2-2:45pm Language: English Programme curated by Aaditya Sathish (@everhadpie ) Departing from their experience of wandering through a Sham Shui Po shopping mall filled with old CCD cameras and DV camcorders, the artists revisit their personal sticky memories through outdated, malfunctioning, and low-pixel electronic devices. They attempt to piece together fragments of the past, present, and future while tracing the idea of death amid the virtual, digital dimension, rethinking the impossibility of nostalgia. Previous editions at Videotage (@videotage_hk ) as part of the closing performance of solo exhibition Site Seeing; Spark Festival, presented by British Council, Videotage, Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network (together with artists Ronan Mackenzie & Aled Simons).

[#SiteSeeing] Wong Pak Hang: Site Seeing 黃百亨:眼前 🟢 Exhibition Details 展覽詳情 23.11.2024 - 5.1.2025 12:00 - 19:00 (Wed to Sun 三至日) 🟢 Opening Reception 開幕酒會 16:00 | 23.11.2024 (Sat 六) CRT televisions create images by rapidly illuminating lines of phosphors, using the persistence of vision to transform these lights into moving images. Cameras also account for the human eye, capturing action in front of the lens, frame by frame, and then connecting them into continuous sequences. Both technologies are designed to complement the human visual system, yet without an observer, they are reduced to repetitive stills and brief flashes of light. In moving images, collaboration between the human and the machine is essential for complete information transmission; only through ‘seeing’ can one ‘be seen.’ The commissioned project, Site Seeing by Hong Kong-based artist Wong Pak Hang, juxtaposes machine perspectives with human vision, exploring conscious and unconscious acts of filming and viewing. Within Videotage’s exhibition space, the artist reconnects cameras and televisions accumulated by the organisation over the years to create a field of machine interaction. Viewers wander between low-resolution lenses and colour-distorted screens, interfering with wireless signals while becoming objects of observation and merging into the image signals. The interplay between virtual and real, delay and immediacy, and engagement and feedback flows continuously along the cables, merging space, media devices, and viewers into a site-specific sensory experience. Site Seeing is the inaugural chapter of Videotage’s media archaeology project, which invites the artist to intervene in the organisation’s exhibition space and media equipment collection. In addition to the exhibition, Wong Pak Hang will extend these discussions through live performances and performance lectures in collaboration with Jonathan Kan, Ian Tang and Hou Lam Tsui. International Open Call for Media Art Projects 2024 DIPLOPIA - What Is At Risk? Introducing one of our Open Call winners Wong Pak Hang, Samson - Unrested Noir: Collection of Destruction Scenes in Hong Kong Crime Film Wong Pak Hang, Samson is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2018. Wong works with digital and 2D mixed media, including photography, video, painting, and installation, to explore themes related to modern life and the intersection of reality and virtuality. His art reflects humanistic concerns, addressing both civilization and fundamental aspects of humanity. This artwork investigates social upheavals through the evolution of Hong Kong crime films. By curating scenes from films made between 1984 and 2020, he uses cinematic montages and video installations to metaphorically represent contemporary societal issues, such as conflicts and personal trauma. This project draws parallels between the unrest depicted in these films and current global tensions. To see all of our Open Call winners, visit our website. 2024.goldstuecke.net GOLDSTÜCKE 2024 2.
