When Hong Kong-based arts worker and researcher Aaditya Sathish (@everhadpie ) was tapped to curate Unconditional Space at @wonderfruit ‘s tenth edition, he was tasked with expanding the possibilities of imagining interconnected and nurturing futures. Sathish invited a diverse lineup of artists from Southeast Asia and beyond to contribute towards this collective project, through a range of participatory dialogues, workshops, performances, rituals and screenings. The Space invites both the curious and the committed to think through alternative storytelling and future cosmologies through research on the mythologies we inhabit, the food systems that surround us or in forgotten traditions. 🌅🐠🪰
Sathish, who has a background in performance work and curating independent shows, was conscious about the structure’s potential and the larger social and political context of shrinking public space that restricts our ability to gather and therefore dream together. The programme challenges contemporary artists and audiences to adapt and respond to unexpected and fluid conditions, beyond formal institutional settings.
Highlights from the programme include: a deep listening soundscape by @riarrr@stellagareth@divisi62 ; insights on foraging and kitchen utensils by @bakudapan ; Live Cinéma by @petites___planetes ; Mermaids and AI oracles with @lovebettyapple ; @provessel ‘s blend of shadow puppetry and Surrealist games; @derektumala ‘s climate research-based sound installation performance, with @biggesthat ; performances by @keigo_tanaka_music & @helio_compass blending technology and art; a ritual of inner alchemy by @ctsimage@florencelamsoyue , as well as an extended screening programme co-curated by @thehaybale & featuring the likes of Ho Tzu Nyen, Zheng Bo, @nope_sooope@noor_abed@suneil_sanzgiri@montikakhamon@sasaokayuriko.works and more. 💙
