Restoration and Revival:
Elevation of the Hand-Crafted Surface
18 members of the Painter-Stainers' Livery Company will be demonstrating their skills on Thursday 14th May 2-5pm, Friday 15th & Saturday 16th May 10am-5pm.
Such deep roots tie our demonstrators to a shared tradition of hard-won skill, critical rigour and fastidious aesthetic judgement. On display is not only a demonstration of the ability to fashion beautiful and intriguing objects but also a critical understanding of where such products and processes sit within the canon of art and design. In their specific creative vocations, our makers and craftspeople reveal much that is interesting about history and culture – the drives and obsessions born out of the churn and change of a dynamic mercantile system that demanded excellence, innovation and virtuoso performance and continues to do so.
A unique opportunity to experience this live showcase event in the historic Painters' Hall.

We are thrilled to be back participating in London Craft Week. This year’s event will be a series of demonstrations and talks that showcase the expertise and professional experience of our members across the whole spectrum of craft, decoration and restoration - pigment making, wood graining, marbling and trompe l’oeil, fine-art picture framing, gilding, chinoiserie, japanning, gilded botanical art, wallpaper and lincrusta restoration, stencilling, calligraphy, illumination, painting conservation and painted cloth - the original, medieval technique of ‘staining’, from which the Company derives its name.
Our main event will be complemented by a panel discussion on Saturday 16th at 2pm with our very own Lucia Scalisi, Gerry Alabone, Paul Humphries and Stephen Levrant debating the art and challenge of conservation / restoration. There will also be two tours of our Hall on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th at 3pm highlighting the decorative painting and gilding by past and present Company members.
Entry to Painters’ Hall to see the demonstrations is free, and there will also be short talks by some of the artists during all three days. The Panel Discussion and Hall Tours are ticketed events and booking details are on the LCW website - /events/restoration-revival-elevation-of-the-hand-crafted-surface/.
