This is a piece of antique corded lace hand gilded with Dutch gold leaf which has been gently heated to slightly age the surface. I have to be very careful to not get too carried away with the heat colouring otherwise the lace becomes too fragile.

Very excited to be taking part in the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers' demonstration event next week as part of London Craft Week on Thursday 14th - Saturday 16th May.
‘Restoration & Revival: Elevation of the Handcrafted Surface’ will feature 18 members of the Painter-Stainers whose various practices range across the whole spectrum of craft, decoration and restoration - pigment making, wood graining, marbling and trompe l’oeil, fine-art picture framing, gilding, chinoiserie, japanning, gilded botanical art, wallpaper stencilling, lincrusta restoration, sign writing, calligraphy, painting conservation, and painted cloth - - the original, medieval technique of ‘staining’, from which the Company derives its name.
Our event will be complemented by a panel discussion on Saturday 16th at 2pm with our very own Lucia Scalisi, Gerry Alabone, Paul Humphreys and Stephen Levrant debating the art and challenge of conservation / restoration. There will also be tours of our Hall highlighting the decorative painting and gilding by past and present Company members.
All this will take place at the historic Painters’ Hall in the heart of the City of London, a stone’s-throw from St Paul’s Cathedral, the Mansion House and the Royal Exchange.
Entry to Painters’ Hall to see the demonstrations is free, and there will also be short talks by some of the artists during all three days. Next in my Gilded Nature Workshop on November 6th, we will move on to gilding 3D items using real metal loose leaf - poppy, iris and other seedheads, Not everything needs to be completely covered - just the edges / ridges can be gilded on cones, walnuts etc.

Sometimes a flat plain leaf shape can take gilding with variegated leaf - copper at the bottom, gold on top. Fabulous colours, great patterns.
